MATH ~ SCIENCE ~ INSECTS

 Sorting and Graphing
 Teacher will set up math centers with bins of assorted bugs
 Students will sort bugs, and graph how many of each type of bug they
    found
 How can we sort insects based by similar characteristics? How can
we show our results on a bar graph?
MATH ~ SCIENCE ~ INSECTS

 Making Dirt for Class Snack – Measurement
 Students will work in groups to follow recipe for making “dirt”
 Students will measure using cups, teaspoon, and tablespoon
 How do we use standard units of measurement? How can we combine
ingredients to make a new product?
MATH ~ ART ~INSECTS

 Symmetry – Butterfly Wings
 Teacher will give each student a large white paper with an outline of
    a butterfly
 Students will fold paper in half – creating a line of symmetry
 Students will paint ONLY on one half of the paper
 Students will fold the paper in half on the previously folded line

 How can we identify the centerline of symmetry?
LITERACY ~MATH ~ SCIENCE~ INSECTS

 The Very Busy Spider and Grouchy Ladybug – Telling Time
 Teacher will give each student a clock with movable hands. As
teacher reads the book, the students will put their hour and minute
    hands on the correct time.
 How can I tell time on an analog clock?

 Best Bug Parade – Sizes, ordering (smallest to largest)
 Teacher will read Best Bug Parade at read aloud time
 During Math, students will sort bugs in order from smallest to largest
 How can we sort items by size in relation to one another?

 An Inchworm and a Half – Measurement
 Teacher will use Inchworm and a Half as a read aloud text to serve as
    an activating strategy to measuring
 Essential Question: How do we use standards units to measure?
LITERACY ~ SCIENCE ~ INSECTS

 The Very Hungry Caterpillar – Life Cycle and Sequencing
 Students will read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and practice sequencing in
    the correct order
 How can we re-tell a story in sequential order?

 Also practice sequencing of the life cycle of the caterpillar/butterfly
LITERACY ~ SCIENCE ~ INSECTS

 There’s an Ant in Anthony – Chunking
 Teacher will read text aloud, having students write the words they
find that contain the chunk “ant” as they read the story
 How can we identify chunks to help read a word?

 Class will create their own book called There’s an end in
  Brenda.
 Students will brainstorm words containing the chunk end
 Teacher will compile list of “end” words
 Teacher will guide students to create class book
 Students will draw illustrations for class book
 Class will publish book to share with other classes, parents, and
      friends
WRITING ~ LITERACY ~ SCIENCE ~ INSECTS

 An Interview with Harry the Tarantula
 Students will do a mock interview with an insect of their
