Why do people migrate?
How does migration affect the
world?
Terms
 Migration: permanent move to a new location
 NOT travel, commuting, vacation (these are
circulation)
 Immigration: migration TO a location
 Emigration: migration FROM a location
 Internal migration: migration within a country
Push – Pull Factors
 The way geographers analyze why people
migrate.
 Look at pre-test
Push Factors
 lack of paying job
 lack of schools
 lack of healthcare facility
 war, failed harvest,
 natural disaster: flood, fire
Types of Migration
 Voluntary Migration
 when people move of their own free will
 usually trying to find a better standard of living
 Example: moving for jobs and higher wages -
economic migrants
 World example:
Forced Migration
 migrating because of war, persecution,
natural disaster
 Refugees – people who have been forced to
leave their homes
 Refugee Camp
 World Example:
Permanent (long term)
Migration
 When people move forever, to find a new
place to live and don’t plan on returning.
 World Example:
Temporary (short term)
Migration
 When people don’t move forever – they
always intend to go home at some point in the
future.
