over the world.This highly popular annual event has been celebrated in its current format since
1999, but its history is quite different from its modern look. It was started in 1883 as a event of
Hone Nation Championship. After that it was known as event of Five Nations Championship.
Home Nations Championship :- This tournament was started between teams of England and
Scotland with irregular friendly matches. While England, Ireland, United Kingdom and Scotland
home nations were the members of tournament and was known as a tournament of Home Nations.
The format was quite simple which is also follwed in the modern time. Each team has to play with
another team where they awarded with 2 points for a win, 1 for draw and 0 for a loss. And the team
with maximum points at the end of tournament was the overall champion.These regulation remians
unchanged to this day.
Turned into Five Nations Tournament :- This popular anually evet turned into five natios
tournaments in 1910 when France join the tournament. In its hstory this popular event was
withdrew twice due to World War in 1914 and 1942.By the late 1950s the French were really
coming into their own, and they dominated the tournament until the mid-1960s. After that it was
known as five nations championship till the end of 20th century.
Six Nations Chamiopship :- In 1999, Italy joined the tournament, playing first time in 2000 and are
now just an essential a part of the competition as the more established members, they even have a
special clash within the main event, known as the Giuseppe Garibaldi Trophy, to win it is necessary
to beat France in the game they play against each other, should France beat, they instead win the
Trophy.
Similar Tournaments :- Another competition played under the flag of the Six Nations Tournament is
the Triple Crown, although this is not organised every year. To qualify as a Triple Crown winner,
you must be the Home Nations teams and you must have beat all of the other Home Nation teams in
the event. Triple Crown Winners often go on to win the whole Championship, if they do so with
five consuctiv wins.
