Currently, there are many successful pagoda groups performing nationally in Brazil. However, the pioneers of pagoda's musical variety were the group Raiz de Quintal, who gained success in the late 1980s and 1990s under the leadership of Arlindo Cruz and Umbrella. Another iconic pagoda artist is Zeca Pagodinho, who skillfully blended both classic high-pagoda and romantic pagoda styles. In the late 1990s, a college-style pagoda emerged, exemplified by the group Black Race. Over time, the term "pagode" became synonymous with samba due to sambistas using it to refer to their gatherings or pagodas.
