2. WHAT IS PD?
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a
neurodegenerative brain disorder that
causes tremor (trembling of hands) and
slowness of movement due to the death
of 60% to 80% of brain cells.
A person's brain slowly stops producing a
neurotransmitter “dopamine”. With less
and less dopamine, a person has less
and less ability to regulate their
movements, body and emotions.
3. FACTS
According to US
Centers for Disease
Control and
Prevention (CDC), PD
is the 14th top cause
of death in US.
Approximately
60,000 Americans
are diagnosed with
PD every year.
More than 5 mil
people worldwide
are living with PD.
Estimated 15,000 to 20,000 people suffer from PD in Malaysia.
3/5 Americans will
suffer from a
nervous system
disease such as PD
or Alzheimer's
(老年痴呆症)
4. CAUSES OF PD
Toxins
• Manganese 锰
• CO poisoning
(breathing in too
much carbon
monoxide)
Metabolic disorders
新陈代谢失调症
Other neurological disorders
Central nervous system disorders
(CNS - 中枢神经系统失调)
Peripheral nervous system disorders
(PNS - 外周神经系统失调)
Spinal cord disorders, brain damages,
amnesia, sleep disorders, migraines,
seizure disorders, dizziness, complex
regional pain syndrome & etc.
The exact cause of PD is unknown, but 90% PD is due to the
combination of genetics & environment causes.
5. CAUSES OF PD
Food with Manganese
Benefit of manganese:
proper enzyme
functioning, nutrient
absorption, wound
healing and bone
development.
Manganese toxicity from
food sources is rare, but
can adversely affect the
neurological system.
Seafood Nuts Seeds Black Tea Whole
Grains
Spinach Bread Tofu Beans Fishes
6. DEVELOPMENT OF PD
Stage 1
Mild symptoms that
generally do not
interfere with daily
activities. Tremor
and other
movement
symptoms occur on
one side of the
body only.
Stage 2
Tremor, rigidity and
other movement
symptoms affect
both sides of the
body. Walking
problems and poor
posture may
become apparent.
Stage 3
Mid-stage in the
progression of PD.
Loss of balance and
slowness of
movements.
Impair activities of
daily living such as
dressing and eating.
7. DEVELOPMENT OF PD
Stage 4
Able to stand by
themselves but
need assistance to
walk.
Required assistance
even in a simple
task.
Stage 5
Advance stage of
PD. Stiffness in the
legs hard to stand
or walk. Wheelchair
bound. Patient may
experience
hallucinations and
delusions. Patient
may also have
depression.
Stage 1, 2 & 3
8. DEVELOPMENT OF PD
Stage 1
Still able to live alone with some
difficulties to complete day-to-day tasks
Stage 2
Stage 3 Stage 4
Stage 5
Unable to live alone
Personal assistance is required
15-20 years of Progress Development
Wheelchair
bound
9. TREATMENT OF PD
Currently there is no cure for PD.
Patient will normally given medication either to
convert the brain chemical and slow down the
metabolism of the converter in the brain.
Side effect
Feeling anxious, headache, chest pain, difficult
urination, pounding heartbeats, cool feeling,
feeling like you might pass out etc
10. TREATMENT OF PD
Surgical options – DBS “Deep Brain Stimulation”
placement. To implant an electrode into the
brain to deliver the electrical impulses to the
brain.
The placement cost around RM10,000 in General
Hospital of Malaysia & battery last for 5-8 years.
11. RISK FACTORS
Men are more likely to
develop PD than woman
as they’re more likely
to experience head
injury or exposure to
toxins.
Your risk of getting PD is
2% male : 1.3% female.
Commonly develops
from the age of 40 to 60
years old.
Some studies have
shown that drinking
coffee may lower your
risk of developing PD.
Lesser-known symptoms of PD
include depression, lack of
feeling/emotion,
exhaustion/tiredness and memory
loss/difficulties with thinking.
