AN OMDIA EBOOK MOVING AI FROM IDEA TO EXECUTION: MANUFACTURING 3
Global adoption of AI continues to accelerate, moving from initial promise
into real-world value for all types of organizations. Omdia, a powerhouse that
combines Informa Tech’s market leading analyst houses, of Ovum, Heavy Reading,
Tractica, and the majority of IHS Markit’s Technology research, predicts surging
growth and investment through 2021 and beyond, as early adopters deepen
investments and fast followers initiate new projects.
In fact, if AI was a country, then its GDP would place in the top #100 in 2020
(between Jordan and Congo). In less than 5 years, that swells to $200bn USD
spending and a top #50 berth (between Portugal and Peru). AI is powering a
global digital transformation and it’s moving fast.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the US attained a 5.4% increase
in productivity during Q1 2021, the second strongest quarterly growth in the
past decade. Omdia believes the real-world deployment of AI technology and
the spread of AI beyond hyperscalers is driving new levels of efficiency and
productivity. This boost in AI continues to help businesses thrive in a COVID-
affected world and AI budgets are only set to increase in the longer term.
To power that growth, AI will reach further down into the ecosystem – including to
small and midsized businesses (SMBs) – as it becomes more understood, easier to
implement, more scalable and more affordable.
This Omdia eBook, commissioned by Lenovo and NVIDIA, tracks that move from
niche to mainstream for AI across all industries – and in particular for the vertical
of Manufacturing.

AN OMDIA EBOOK MOVING AI FROM IDEA TO EXECUTION: MANUFACTURING
AI spending has grown tremendously in recent years – and the global market for
AI software alone is expected to increase from $17bn in 2019 to $126bn by 2026.
Significant opportunity lies ahead for AI software market penetration, despite
short-term economic and market turbulence.
Global AI Software Spending
Following a traditional adoption path, many enterprises first pilot the technology
with proof-of-concept (PoC) projects, before later moving to full-scale
implementation, and often finding AI software can help cut costs and generate
new revenue streams. Yet, AI software remains a relatively small portion of overall
software sales, with varying acceptance across industries.
For many, moving beyond the PoC stage has been a significant challenge – but
2020/2021 is proving to be a tipping point in attitudes (especially as COVID
accelerates some of the existing trends towards digital and virtual solutions). In an
Omdia survey, 24% of enterprises now say they have fully deployed AI in at least
one function, as the barrier to entry for what were traditionally highly specialized
data and analytics practices has fallen steadily over the past five years.
It’s no longer a conversation of how AI ‘could’ transform businesses, but how
it is already doing so. With an increasing number of players involved, the
democratization of AI also moves out of the niche and into the mainstream.

AN OMDIA EBOOK MOVING AI FROM IDEA TO EXECUTION: MANUFACTURING
A mixture of technical and non-technical challenges have held back adoption
of AI in many businesses to date – with lack of qualified personnel (the human
challenge), complexity (the technical challenge) and lack of budget (the monetary
challenge) the top three ranked amongst enterprises.
However, as adoption increases and businesses increasingly see the ROIs proven
out from AI solutions and use cases, the business value becomes clearer and
businesses are ready for the next wave of projects.
A critical element of this learning is identifying and deploying the best
performance metrics. With so much investment at stake and the early-stage
nature of AI market adoption, key performance indicators (KPIs) for AI are
the most important guardrail for senior management to use to guide their
AI strategies. Predictably, the most common KPIs focus on cost reduction,
engagement and time reduction.
Most encouragingly, the payoff period for AI is also moving closer – a particularly
important consideration for the SMB community who can drive the next wave of
adoption. In a recent Omdia survey, 72% of small and midsized businesses (SMB,
Less than $1bn revenue) respondents said they were confident/very confident
AI will deliver positive results towards their business goals within the next 12-24
months. Omdia expects this confidence to translate into surging growth of AI
applications in 2021.

Early adopters of AI may gain a competitive advantage, but fast followers can
quickly close the gap. In particular, fast followers can game plan potential
acceleration of their AI deployment, develop specifications and RFPs to channel AI
vendor proposals, learn from the process to choose their vendors/find tools, and
move to deployment (and ROI) with ever increasing speed. This is true for both
Large Enterprise and SMBs.
As the market grows, the abundance and ubiquity of data coupled with the maturation
of self-service analytics has helped companies democratize data among business
users and break down data silos between departments. The democratization of AI
also extends to the vendor community. For example, where AI hardware used to
be the reserve of cloud hyperscalers, AI is now firmly within the broader market for
enterprise data centres – with massive potential for AI-enabled servers.
Fast followers can reap the benefit of seeing AI-enabled hardware offered to
them in accessible and affordable options, with familiar-looking approaches
and solutions. For enterprises and SMBs where the human challenges of
knowledge/staff training remains a barrier, buying in ready-made AI expertise
and professional services provides a clear and easy adoption path. In fact, vendor
expertise is the top reason why enterprises selected a particular commercial
AI solution vendor (selected within the top 3 by 79%), with spending on AI
professional services split across the spectrum of solution types.
Vendor-led, affordable, accessible and scalable solutions are key in accelerating
the AI growth path through the SMB community.

The movement of ‘Industry 4.0’ is bringing digital transformation to the
manufacturing industry, as enterprises and factory operators look to harness the
power of data and software to bring real ROI to operations and strategy. Industry
4.0 is driven by the adoption of both IoT and AI technology – and the move
towards automation.
However, the manufacturing space is a cautious industry – dominated by
hardware, long ROI/payback periods, technical challenges from legacy systems,
and the human challenges such as an ageing workforce.
Industrial IoT (IIoT) has been in development and adoption for decades, but still
has a long way to go. As the conversation evolves, focus moves away from purely
hardware, through the challenges of connectivity, and now firmly onto software
and applications. That means analytics and AI are increasingly at the forefront of
new technology adoption – and applications such as Digital Twin are part of both
operations and business strategy.
Despite its caution, the manufacturing industry will spend $13.6bn USD on
AI software between 2019-2026, with the top three applications of Quality
Monitoring, Predictive Analytics and Device Monitoring & Control. In the Omdia
AI Maturity Survey, almost 1 in 4 manufacturing end-users say they’ve already
implemented an AI project within ‘Operations’ (or will within 12 months).
Predictably, this shows a clear focus on the operational side of the business –
the same survey shows ‘reduce bottom line costs’ as the single most important
outcome for AI projects – but as the IT/OT (Operational Technology) convergence
continues, it brings new solutions and new thinking to the market. Companies
previously at opposite ends of the ecosystem are now potential collaborators
or competitors – and the end-users can reap the rewards of systems that are
increasingly easy to implement and can cover a wider range of applications

Across all industries, Omdia research shows that Reduced Cost, Reduced Time and
Engagement are the top 3 KPIs used by enterprises when implementing AI projects.
In the manufacturing sector, Engagement is replaced in the top 3 by Improving
Accuracy – with ‘Showing ROI’ and ‘Productivity’ ranking just outside.
Top rated KPIs
With such a strong focus on the operational side of business and the traditional
hardware focus, it’s no wonder that this is reflected in both KPIs/drivers, but also in
the top perceived challenges.
For example, the discussion between cloud and edge burns brightly in
manufacturing. The Industrial Edge Computing market is still nascent but is
expected to grow from $590 million in 2019 to over $4.5 billion by 2030.
With so many connected devices, the need for low latency and concerns over
privacy/security, this makes sense for many enterprises and factories.
However, attitudes are changing as enterprises see the scalability and ROI that
cloud-computing can bring. The ability to deploy IIoT projects with analytics locally
is now becoming increasingly viable, with the emergence of edge hardware and
software solutions from a range of different types of vendors. This includes vendors
of automation, as well as leading hyperscalers, and a host of companies in between.
This unlocks the next level of spend from the manufacturing sector – where the
long-term CAGR of approx. -7% for OT equipment spend is compared to a long-
term CAGR of around 10% for IT/OT software in the same space. Early adopters are
also seeing proven results – the Omdia IIoT Project Database showing an average
payback on recent projects such as a 36% reduction in design time, 20% reduction in
inventory cost, and 14% increase in labor efficiency.

Computational Fluid Dynamics accelerated with AI
According to the Omdia ICT Enterprise Insights survey, “Product Design and
Simulation” ranks second for upcoming IT investment over the next 18 months from
manufacturing industry end-users, only behind the category of “Manufacturing
Operations Management”. Improving the product design can bring huge ROI for
companies investing in AI.
In the chemical process industry, the vast majority of products are manufactured in
stirred tanks. While configurations change infrequently, recipes change constantly
– meaning huge reliance on experimentation and Computational Fluid Dynamics
(CFD) as part of the design process to make recipes work in a fixed tank. In the
past decade, CFD technology and the on-site computing processing power have
improved dramatically – but simulations have become more complex, detailed and
accurate, and can still take 3-4 days to complete.
Simply adding more processing power and purchasing more expensive CFD
software is not a viable option for many. This is why Poland-based AI & HPC solution
company, byteLAKE, has created the CFD Suite to provide AI-accelerated modelling.
CFD Suite includes several solver specific AI models, including for chemical mixing
applications. It works with a range of different computing configurations (CPU,
GPU, PC, Data Center etc.) and its roadmap includes integration within the Lenovo
Intelligence Computing Orchestration (LiCO).
The solution uses AI models to effectively predict the outcome of conventional CFD
simulations – and early results show byteLAKE has achieved 93% accuracy, reducing
turnaround time of mixing simulations from hours to minutes. This allows faster
scale up, reduced design time and cost, and is achievable without needing to invest
in costly hardware adaptations. The AI-based CFD simulation means engineers can
see results in minutes rather than hours.

Manufacturing – Case Study
Cost savings of half a million dollars are common per
project – for example where AI for CFD Suite from
byteLAKE powers MIXiT, the Enterprise mixing analysis
software developed by Tridiagonal. Extensively used in
the chemical/pharmaceutical industry to reduce design
and optimize production in stirred tanks, the software
allows design/plant engineers to conduct near real time
analysis of mixing. This opens the possibility for building
full 3-D CFD driven Digital twins in the future.
“CFD simulations help create products
we use daily. From shower gels to pharmacies and various
chemicals. To meet the ever-increasing demand for a faster turnaround time
of such simulations, byteLAKE has been leveraging AI to help industries reduce
computational and operational costs as well as ultimately expedite calculations
of CFD simulations. In turn, engineers get a tool that helps them validate more
designs within the same time and eventually build products more efficiently.
We used Lenovo’s infrastructure powered by Intel® CPU processors and NVIDIA
V100 GPUs to cut the time of chemical mixing CFD simulations from approx. 4
hours to under 10 minutes while keeping the accuracy of 93%”
Marcin Rojek, byteLAKE’s co-founder

  • 3. AN OMDIA EBOOK MOVING AI FROM IDEA TO EXECUTION: MANUFACTURING 3 Global adoption of AI continues to accelerate, moving from initial promise into real-world value for all types of organizations. Omdia, a powerhouse that combines Informa Tech’s market leading analyst houses, of Ovum, Heavy Reading, Tractica, and the majority of IHS Markit’s Technology research, predicts surging growth and investment through 2021 and beyond, as early adopters deepen investments and fast followers initiate new projects. In fact, if AI was a country, then its GDP would place in the top #100 in 2020 (between Jordan and Congo). In less than 5 years, that swells to $200bn USD spending and a top #50 berth (between Portugal and Peru). AI is powering a global digital transformation and it’s moving fast. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the US attained a 5.4% increase in productivity during Q1 2021, the second strongest quarterly growth in the past decade. Omdia believes the real-world deployment of AI technology and the spread of AI beyond hyperscalers is driving new levels of efficiency and productivity. This boost in AI continues to help businesses thrive in a COVID- affected world and AI budgets are only set to increase in the longer term. To power that growth, AI will reach further down into the ecosystem – including to small and midsized businesses (SMBs) – as it becomes more understood, easier to implement, more scalable and more affordable. This Omdia eBook, commissioned by Lenovo and NVIDIA, tracks that move from niche to mainstream for AI across all industries – and in particular for the vertical of Manufacturing. The Widening World of AI Global AI Spending (Software, Hardware and Data Centre) Source: Omdia “Now more than ever, knowledge gained from enterprise data and analytics can serve as an actionable antidote to global uncertainty.” Bradley Shimmin, Chief Analyst, AI Platforms, Analytics, and Data Management - Omdia
  • 4. 4 AN OMDIA EBOOK MOVING AI FROM IDEA TO EXECUTION: MANUFACTURING AI spending has grown tremendously in recent years – and the global market for AI software alone is expected to increase from $17bn in 2019 to $126bn by 2026. Significant opportunity lies ahead for AI software market penetration, despite short-term economic and market turbulence. Global AI Software Spending Following a traditional adoption path, many enterprises first pilot the technology with proof-of-concept (PoC) projects, before later moving to full-scale implementation, and often finding AI software can help cut costs and generate new revenue streams. Yet, AI software remains a relatively small portion of overall software sales, with varying acceptance across industries. For many, moving beyond the PoC stage has been a significant challenge – but 2020/2021 is proving to be a tipping point in attitudes (especially as COVID accelerates some of the existing trends towards digital and virtual solutions). In an Omdia survey, 24% of enterprises now say they have fully deployed AI in at least one function, as the barrier to entry for what were traditionally highly specialized data and analytics practices has fallen steadily over the past five years. It’s no longer a conversation of how AI ‘could’ transform businesses, but how it is already doing so. With an increasing number of players involved, the democratization of AI also moves out of the niche and into the mainstream. • 5. 5 AN OMDIA EBOOK MOVING AI FROM IDEA TO EXECUTION: MANUFACTURING A mixture of technical and non-technical challenges have held back adoption of AI in many businesses to date – with lack of qualified personnel (the human challenge), complexity (the technical challenge) and lack of budget (the monetary challenge) the top three ranked amongst enterprises. However, as adoption increases and businesses increasingly see the ROIs proven out from AI solutions and use cases, the business value becomes clearer and businesses are ready for the next wave of projects. A critical element of this learning is identifying and deploying the best performance metrics. With so much investment at stake and the early-stage nature of AI market adoption, key performance indicators (KPIs) for AI are the most important guardrail for senior management to use to guide their AI strategies. Predictably, the most common KPIs focus on cost reduction, engagement and time reduction. Most encouragingly, the payoff period for AI is also moving closer – a particularly important consideration for the SMB community who can drive the next wave of adoption. In a recent Omdia survey, 72% of small and midsized businesses (SMB, Less than $1bn revenue) respondents said they were confident/very confident AI will deliver positive results towards their business goals within the next 12-24 months. Omdia expects this confidence to translate into surging growth of AI applications in 2021. The AI Drivers and Challenges What is the biggest factor slowing your organisation’s adoption of AI? • 6. 6 AN OMDIA EBOOK MOVING AI FROM IDEA TO EXECUTION: MANUFACTURING Early adopters of AI may gain a competitive advantage, but fast followers can quickly close the gap. In particular, fast followers can game plan potential acceleration of their AI deployment, develop specifications and RFPs to channel AI vendor proposals, learn from the process to choose their vendors/find tools, and move to deployment (and ROI) with ever increasing speed. This is true for both Large Enterprise and SMBs. As the market grows, the abundance and ubiquity of data coupled with the maturation of self-service analytics has helped companies democratize data among business users and break down data silos between departments. The democratization of AI also extends to the vendor community. For example, where AI hardware used to be the reserve of cloud hyperscalers, AI is now firmly within the broader market for enterprise data centres – with massive potential for AI-enabled servers. Fast followers can reap the benefit of seeing AI-enabled hardware offered to them in accessible and affordable options, with familiar-looking approaches and solutions. For enterprises and SMBs where the human challenges of knowledge/staff training remains a barrier, buying in ready-made AI expertise and professional services provides a clear and easy adoption path. In fact, vendor expertise is the top reason why enterprises selected a particular commercial AI solution vendor (selected within the top 3 by 79%), with spending on AI professional services split across the spectrum of solution types. Vendor-led, affordable, accessible and scalable solutions are key in accelerating the AI growth path through the SMB community. • 8. AN OMDIA EBOOK MOVING AI FROM IDEA TO EXECUTION: MANUFACTURING 8 AN OMDIA EBOOK MOVING AI FROM IDEA TO EXECUTION The movement of ‘Industry 4.0’ is bringing digital transformation to the manufacturing industry, as enterprises and factory operators look to harness the power of data and software to bring real ROI to operations and strategy. Industry 4.0 is driven by the adoption of both IoT and AI technology – and the move towards automation. However, the manufacturing space is a cautious industry – dominated by hardware, long ROI/payback periods, technical challenges from legacy systems, and the human challenges such as an ageing workforce. Industrial IoT (IIoT) has been in development and adoption for decades, but still has a long way to go. As the conversation evolves, focus moves away from purely hardware, through the challenges of connectivity, and now firmly onto software and applications. That means analytics and AI are increasingly at the forefront of new technology adoption – and applications such as Digital Twin are part of both operations and business strategy. Despite its caution, the manufacturing industry will spend $13.6bn USD on AI software between 2019-2026, with the top three applications of Quality Monitoring, Predictive Analytics and Device Monitoring & Control. In the Omdia AI Maturity Survey, almost 1 in 4 manufacturing end-users say they’ve already implemented an AI project within ‘Operations’ (or will within 12 months). Predictably, this shows a clear focus on the operational side of the business – the same survey shows ‘reduce bottom line costs’ as the single most important outcome for AI projects – but as the IT/OT (Operational Technology) convergence continues, it brings new solutions and new thinking to the market. Companies previously at opposite ends of the ecosystem are now potential collaborators or competitors – and the end-users can reap the rewards of systems that are increasingly easy to implement and can cover a wider range of applications Percentage AI software spend by application: 2019 - 2026 Manufacturing – An Introduction for AI 0 5% 10% 15% 20% 25% 30% Voice/speech recognition Process optimization Visual analytics Device monitoring & control Predictive analytics Quality monitoring Modeling & simulation
  • 9. AN OMDIA EBOOK MOVING AI FROM IDEA TO EXECUTION: MANUFACTURING 9 AN OMDIA EBOOK MOVING AI FROM IDEA TO EXECUTION Across all industries, Omdia research shows that Reduced Cost, Reduced Time and Engagement are the top 3 KPIs used by enterprises when implementing AI projects. In the manufacturing sector, Engagement is replaced in the top 3 by Improving Accuracy – with ‘Showing ROI’ and ‘Productivity’ ranking just outside. Top rated KPIs With such a strong focus on the operational side of business and the traditional hardware focus, it’s no wonder that this is reflected in both KPIs/drivers, but also in the top perceived challenges. For example, the discussion between cloud and edge burns brightly in manufacturing. The Industrial Edge Computing market is still nascent but is expected to grow from $590 million in 2019 to over $4.5 billion by 2030. With so many connected devices, the need for low latency and concerns over privacy/security, this makes sense for many enterprises and factories. However, attitudes are changing as enterprises see the scalability and ROI that cloud-computing can bring. The ability to deploy IIoT projects with analytics locally is now becoming increasingly viable, with the emergence of edge hardware and software solutions from a range of different types of vendors. This includes vendors of automation, as well as leading hyperscalers, and a host of companies in between. This unlocks the next level of spend from the manufacturing sector – where the long-term CAGR of approx. -7% for OT equipment spend is compared to a long- term CAGR of around 10% for IT/OT software in the same space. Early adopters are also seeing proven results – the Omdia IIoT Project Database showing an average payback on recent projects such as a 36% reduction in design time, 20% reduction in inventory cost, and 14% increase in labor efficiency. Long term CAGRs for equipment versus software Manufacturing – Applications & Challenges Reduced time Engagement Reduced cost -7% OT equipment 10% IT/OT software
  • 10. AN OMDIA EBOOK MOVING AI FROM IDEA TO EXECUTION: MANUFACTURING 10 AN OMDIA EBOOK MOVING AI FROM IDEA TO EXECUTION Computational Fluid Dynamics accelerated with AI According to the Omdia ICT Enterprise Insights survey, “Product Design and Simulation” ranks second for upcoming IT investment over the next 18 months from manufacturing industry end-users, only behind the category of “Manufacturing Operations Management”. Improving the product design can bring huge ROI for companies investing in AI. In the chemical process industry, the vast majority of products are manufactured in stirred tanks. While configurations change infrequently, recipes change constantly – meaning huge reliance on experimentation and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) as part of the design process to make recipes work in a fixed tank. In the past decade, CFD technology and the on-site computing processing power have improved dramatically – but simulations have become more complex, detailed and accurate, and can still take 3-4 days to complete. Simply adding more processing power and purchasing more expensive CFD software is not a viable option for many. This is why Poland-based AI & HPC solution company, byteLAKE, has created the CFD Suite to provide AI-accelerated modelling. CFD Suite includes several solver specific AI models, including for chemical mixing applications. It works with a range of different computing configurations (CPU, GPU, PC, Data Center etc.) and its roadmap includes integration within the Lenovo Intelligence Computing Orchestration (LiCO). The solution uses AI models to effectively predict the outcome of conventional CFD simulations – and early results show byteLAKE has achieved 93% accuracy, reducing turnaround time of mixing simulations from hours to minutes. This allows faster scale up, reduced design time and cost, and is achievable without needing to invest in costly hardware adaptations. The AI-based CFD simulation means engineers can see results in minutes rather than hours. Manufacturing – Case Study Cost savings of half a million dollars are common per project – for example where AI for CFD Suite from byteLAKE powers MIXiT, the Enterprise mixing analysis software developed by Tridiagonal. Extensively used in the chemical/pharmaceutical industry to reduce design and optimize production in stirred tanks, the software allows design/plant engineers to conduct near real time analysis of mixing. This opens the possibility for building full 3-D CFD driven Digital twins in the future.
  • 11. “CFD simulations help create products we use daily. From shower gels to pharmacies and various chemicals. To meet the ever-increasing demand for a faster turnaround time of such simulations, byteLAKE has been leveraging AI to help industries reduce computational and operational costs as well as ultimately expedite calculations of CFD simulations. In turn, engineers get a tool that helps them validate more designs within the same time and eventually build products more efficiently. We used Lenovo’s infrastructure powered by Intel® CPU processors and NVIDIA V100 GPUs to cut the time of chemical mixing CFD simulations from approx. 4 hours to under 10 minutes while keeping the accuracy of 93%” Marcin Rojek, byteLAKE’s co-founder
