The Arawak Indians were originally the people
who lived in Jamaica and they gave it the name
originally it was “Xaymaca” which means the
island of springs.
Christopher Columbus on voyage of the New
World spotted island in 1494 and called it St Iago
Spaniards settled the island in 1509 and the
indians died out because of the diseases brought
by the Spaniards as well as enslavement

Thesis: Even though Jamaica is a wonderful place to live and you can get lost in the culture and have a fun time with the resorts, the tourist attractions the beach and it being the most beautiful place to go on vacation. Independence Day; The day of freedom from British Rule which was the first monday in August 6th, 1962 this is when basically everybody on the island comes out for fun there are shows, music,dancing, drinking, celebration of how they got their freedom after all those years oppressed like in the united states when african americans got our freedom, its the equivalent of christmas in America, There is a festival every year called the Jonkonnu Festival ( masquerade theme)\nReggae Sunsplash: as of 1978 the reggae sunsplash has become the biggest reggae musical festival in the world it last for 4 nights in August in Montego Bay.
