2. We decided to involve a Narrative in our music
video. It is used by lots of Alternative Rock/Indie
artists because it gives the viewer something to
relate to. It is also a very literally way to help
explain the meaning of the song. We understood
this, after researching other music videos of the
same genre, such as Paranoid Android by
Radiohead.
We have complimented this idea by also adding a
performance setting to create a stronger link
between the visuals and soundtrack. Most music
videos will use one or the other but we believe
that the band performance is also important for
creating a star persona. Performance shots are
also key to the bands representation; it is an
opportunity for them to be able to show off.
3. In our performance shots, we made sure to
use dark lighting combined with
black/white orientated clothing to make
the band stand out. I think technique is a
good way of creating a powerful metaphor
for the bands image.
We used the idea of our main character
wearing a mask to give our narrative a bit
of extra spice. It makes viewers find our
video more interesting because it
challenges the conventions of other
narratives by creating an enigma.
4. During our music video research, we noticed
that in most Alternative Rock/ Indie music
videos, it was important for the editing to be
very faced paced in order to keep up with
the rhythm of the song. To do this we made
sure that we used a wide variety of shot
types and angles to make lots of fast
transitions between them.
Using long shots helped to establish the
band as a whole, developing a
representation of their style and persona.
Whereas individual snippets of close up
angles shows off the band’s skill and
improves continuity shared by the visuals
and soundtrack.
5. The target audience was around 12-20
year olds. We decided to use an urban
setting and use aspects of this (Graffiti)
because they are features that are
popular to this age group. By doing this, it
encourages the audience to relate to the
narrative.
The Graffiti scene is an example of our
character being reckless and causing havoc.
This is a typical convention of the Rock ‘n’ Roll
attitude presented in music videos of a similar
genre.
We have challenged this convention by
creating a parallel narrative set in the home
location. This is used to exaggerate the
contrast of boring stay at home to the hectic
outside. Therefore helping develop the
meaning behind the song lyrics too.
6. Digipak
From our research, we found that it was a good idea to for the digipak to
include pictures of the band, so that we can represent the members in a
specific way. In our digipak we have used pictures of the band having fun and
pulling faces. This sell the idea that the music is very fun-loving and upbeat.
7. Magazine Advert
After researching other music adverts
for magazines, we understood that
ours need to be big and bold to stand
out. We did this by using a small
colour pallet, large lettering and just
ONE photo in order to hold back too
much clutter.
The Advert needs to represent the
Album as well as the Band. We have
reflected “night” to show of a quirky
aspect of the band and also have
made the band name the largest to
show how important this band is.
We have also added extra
information, such as the record label’s
logo, a review quote to further sell the
album and a website address to find
out more about the band.
