• Divorce mediation is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to a traditional divorce. The
way mediation works is that a trained neutral party facilitates and aids the spouses or domestic
partners in coming to their own agreement, which settles the issues in their divorce, including:

request a divorce by claiming that there’s been an “irretrievable breakdown” in their

• A New York couple may get a no-fault divorce on any of the following grounds:
• the marriage/domestic partnership has broken down irretrievably for at least six months.

You and your partner must be residents of New York City. If one or both of you are not residents
of New York City, one of you must be employed by the City of New York.
