• New immigrants to America would live with 
people of the same culture

• They worked in sweatshops – workplace 
(factories) in long unhealthy working conditions
Chinese Exclusion Act 
• Banned Chinese people from immigrating to 
the US for 10 years.
• Tenements –poorly 
built, overcrowded 
apartment buildings 
• NYC lower East Side 
• Russian (Jewish) 
community
Jocab Riis 
• A journalist and photographer that became 
famous for exposing the horrible conditions in 
NYC tenements
Help for Immigrants 
• Settlement house- neighborhood center in 
poor areas that offered education, recreation 
and social activities 
• The staff was all volunteers- in NYC
Jane Adams 
• Jane Adams created-Hull House- settlement 
home in Chicago 
• English Classes 
• Day Care 
• Health Services 
• Clubs (sports)
• After the county sees Riis pictures, NYC and 
other cities reform it living conditions 
• NYC also saw this as an opportunity to build 
underground mass transit subways
• Why were African American also considered 
immigrants if they already lived in the United
