What is visibility?

• Science has a cumulative character, in permanent change.
• It is necessary to communicate the results of scientific research so
that other (the scientific community) can continue to research.
• The researcher starts from preexisting knowledge, which has
previously been communicated.

• The more or less projection of a research work is measured in terms
of visibility. The researcher wants maximum dissemination of their
research among their specific scientific community, and that their
research is used and cited in other studies (citations).
• Publication and editing does not necessarily give maximum visibility to
a paper.
• The levels of visibility are conditioned not only by the originality,
novelty and quality of the results of the research, but also by the
prestige and reputation of the scientific journal where the results are
published.
• The medium through which the results of a research is communicated
determines a potential visibility and impact of work.

The impact factor of a journal (JIF) measures the quality of a Web of
Science journal, based on the number of citations received for articles
published in it (original articles and reviews).
The one-year impact factor is calculated by dividing the number of citations
received that year, from the articles published in the previous two years, by the
number of articles published during the last two years.

Journals included in a JCR subject category are
divided into quartiles, based on the impact factors
(JIF). The 25% with the highest score are the
journals included in Q1, the next 25% in Q2 and
so on until Q4.
The quartiles are comparable between subject
categories, unlike the impact factors, which are
only within the same category.

Scimago Journal Rank (SJR) is a measurement factor that establishes
the quality of scientific publications (Scopus journals) based on the
count of citations obtained by each publication. The calculation of this
index is done by counting the number of citations received, weighing the
importance or prestige of the journals from which said citations come.
The SJR indicator is calculated on the basis of the citations received by
the journals in a period of 3 years, giving a greater weight to citations
from prestigious journals (with high citation rates and low self-citations),
using the Google PageRank algorithm.
SJR also uses the quartiles, following the same scheme as the JCR.

The h-index is based on the highest
number of papers included that have had
at least the same number of citations.
An index of h means that there are h
papers that have each been cited at
least h times. For example, an h-index of
20 means there are 20 items that have 20
citation or more.
It is possible to use h-index not just for
authors. Also it is possible for a
researcher group, hospitals, universities,
journals, etc.
