1. Introduction
Despite being the world’s tenth largest consumer of energy, Brazil is an example as to what can be achieved with
clean, renewable energy sources on a global scale; it is a world leader in pioneering new biofuel technologies.
Objectives:
The Brazilian consumers distinguish products by the brand, associated them concept with high quality, trust,
loyalty, and status. Despite the fact that Brazilian consumers recognize distinct brands, they are influenced by
those brands in purchasing decisions and eventual contribute as opinion makers to attract new consumers to the
brands.
Product Characteristic:
Power failure warning that alerts the user by flashing a temperature display. It may display the maximum
temperature reached during the power failure, and whether frozen food has defrosted or may contain harmful
bacteria.
Chilled water and ice from a dispenser in the door. Water and ice dispensing became available in the 1970s.
In some refrigerators, the process of making ice is built-in so the user doesn't have to manually use ice trays.
Some refrigerators have water chillers and water filtration systems.
Cabinet rollers that lets the refrigerator roll out for easier cleaning
Adjustable shelves and trays
A status indicator that notifies when it is time to change the water filter
An in-door ice caddy, which relocates the ice-maker storage to the freezer door and saves approximately 60
liters (2 cu ft.) of usable freezer space. It is also removable, and helps to prevent ice-maker clogging.
A cooling zone in the refrigerator door shelves. Air from the freezer section is diverted to the refrigerator
door, to cool milk or juice stored in the door shelf.
A drop down door built into the refrigerator main door, giving easy access to frequently used items such as
milk, thus saving energy by not having to open the main door.
A Fast Freeze function to rapidly cool foods by running the compressor for a predetermined amount of time
and thus temporarily lowering the freezer temperature below normal operating levels. It is recommended to
use this feature several hours before adding more than 1kg of unfrozen food to the freezer. For freezers
without this feature, lowering the temperature setting to the coldest will have the same effect.
2. Target refrigerator technology overview
Brazilian popular refrigerators consist of a one-door cabinet with a small self-contained freezer compartment, as
illustrated in a single vapor compression
One-door refrigerator
The European and Brazilian models that have been used for comparison purposes have similar refrigeration
system, same sizes, and are even the same brand. The major discrepancy is only the total gross capacity, i.e., 255 l
in the European and 240 l in the Brazilian model. 272 Energy Efficiency (2009) 2:271–286cycle that operates at
the freezer evaporating saturation temperature provides refrigeration for both the fresh food and freezer
compartments. The refrigeration circuit comprises four simple elements: a compressor, capillary tube (expansion
valve), an evaporator, and a condenser. The distribution of cool air within the cabinet is via natural convection
from the evaporator, meaning that there is no fan to distribute air within the cabinet. In general, most of these
simple models do not have complex controls or accessories.
The one-door household refrigerator belongs to the one-star classification according to Technical Standard (ISO
7371 1995). In compliance with the standards, it is designed to maintain an internal temperature of 5°C within the
fresh food compartment and −6°C within the frozen food compartment. A thermostat located at the evaporator,
which switches the compressor on and off, provides the temperature control in the cooling process. For this study,
the most commonly sold refrigerator in the Brazilian market was used as the reference for the technical and
economic analysis. The baseline refrigerator has a total gross capacity of330 l and has an average 31 l of net
volume within the frozen food compartment.
Country environmental characteristics:
A refrigerator (colloquially fridge) is a common household appliance that consists of a thermally compartment
and a heat pump (mechanical, electronic, or chemical) that transfers heat from the inside of the fridge to its
external environment so that the inside of the fridge is cooled to a temperature below the ambient temperature of
the room. Refrigeration is an essential food storage technique in developed countries. Lower temperatures in a
confined volume lower the reproduction rate of bacteria, so the refrigerator reduces the rate ofspoilage.
A refrigerator maintains a temperature a few degrees above the freezing point of water. Optimum temperature
range for perishable food storage is 3 to 5 °C (37 to 41 °F).A similar device that maintains a temperature below
the freezing point of water is called a freezer. The refrigerator replaced the icebox, which was a common
household appliance for almost a century and a half prior. For this reason, a refrigerator is sometimes referred to
as an icebox.
