The Ballad
Teaching plan: The Medieval Ballad
Rationale: This teaching unit, consisting of two
lessons, aims to raise students' awareness of the role
that the oral tradition had in the development of English
literature. Moreover, students are expected to realize that
literature is not something abstract, but something that
always leaves a "track", as it happens with the ballad.
They will be encouraged to draw comparisons between
the traditional medieval English poem Lord Randal and
Bob Dylan's A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall, and eventually
any other modern ballad they know.
Target Class: 3rd year of Liceo Linguistico
Time location: 1st term
Number of Students: 19 (1 student with Attention Deficit
Hyperactivity Disorder ADHD)

Age: 16-17 years old
Level: Intermediate, corresponding to B1 of CEFR
Pre-requisites: SS are expected to be able to carry out a
basic text analysis; they should to be familiar with the
language of literature;
Objectives: Students will familiarize themselves with the
literary genre of ballad; Students will be able to decode
some linguistic features of Middle English and compare
them with the modern language; Finally they will improve
their text analysis techniques.

Timing: 2 lessons (60 mins each)
