10. Intro (Acts 17:1-10)
Paul entered Thessalonica while on his second
missionary journey.
He preached there for three weeks and was
able to establish a church.
However, a group of jealous Jews interpreted
Paul's message to mean that he was
proclaiming another ruler in opposition to the
Roman emperor, and he was forced to leave
town
11. Intro…
Because of Paul's concern for this young
church, he sent his coworker, Timothy, to learn
how the Thessalonians were doing.
Timothy reported that the Christians' faith
remained strong but that they continued to be
persecuted by those who had banished Paul.
Timothy also brought back questions which Paul
had not had time to answer during his short
stay.
12. Intro…
First Thessalonians was Paul's first attempt at
offering encouragement and answering
questions
In fact it was probably the first of Paul's
epistles.
It was written from Corinth only a few months
after Paul had left Thessalonica.
13. In 1 Thessalonians Paul offers
encouragement in four major areas:
(1) How can I be sure that I will be with
Jesus after death?
(2) How can I be sure that Jesus is
coming again?
(3) How can I be sure that Jesus hasn't
forgotten me when I am suffering
persecution?
(4) How can I be sure that my life is
pleasing to God?
16. WHAT ARE THE THREE POINTS
FOR WHICH PAUL THANKS
GOD FOR THE CHURCH AT
THESSALONICA?
17. WHAT ARE THE THREE POINTS
FOR WHICH PAUL THANKS GOD
FOR THE CHURCH AT
THESSALONICA?
WORK PRODUCED BY FAITH
YOUR LABOR PROMPTED BY
LOVE
YOUR ENDURANCE INSPIRED BY
HOPE
18. (1) ALWAYS THANKED
GOD FOR THEM ALL,
(2) MENTIONED THEM IN THEIR
PRAYERS
(3) CONTINUALLY

LOVE AND HOPE) WHICH
CHARACTERIZED THEIR LIVES.
21. THEIR FAITH IN GOD WAS NOT
A CONCEPT. BUT THE CHANGE
WAS EVIDENT FROM THEIR
LIVES.
22. Faith, love, hope
your work of faith
your labor of love
patience of hope

from heaven
1 Thessalonians 1:3 1 Thessalonians 1:9–10
23. Work of Faith
Faith must always lead to works (James2:14–
26)
24. Labour of love
A true love for people leads to labour for them;
otherwise it degenerates into mere sentimentality.
Moreover, this ‘labour’ is kopos, which denotes
‘either the fatiguing nature of what is done or the
magnitude of the exertion required’
We are “taught by God to love one another” (1
Thess. 4:9).
We serve Christ because we love Him; this is the
“labor of love”
“If ye love me, keep my commandments”
(John 14:15)
25. Patience of hope
true hope, which looks expectantly for the
Lord’s return, leads to endurance (hypomonē),
which is patient fortitude in the face of
opposition.
26. WHAT ARE OUR PRAYER
POINTS ABOUT?
ARE THE PEOPLE WHOM WE
MENTOR PART OF OUR

34. With power
Words spoken in human weakness need to be
confirmed with divine power.
The reference is to the internal operation of the
Holy Spirit.
1 Cor. 2:1–5.
It is only by his power that the Word can
penetrate people’s mind, heart, conscience
and will.
Word empowered by Holy Spirit
Word of God is the Sword of the Spirit
(Eph:6:17)
36. Deep conviction
Paul’s preaching was not only powerful in its
effect but confident in its presentation.
He was sure of his message, of its truth and its
relevance, and in consequence was bold in
proclaiming it.
38. Holy Spirit
belong to all the other Three
the truth of the Word, the conviction with which we
speak it, and the power of its impact on others all
come from the Holy Spirit
It is he who illumines our minds, so that we
formulate our message with integrity and clarity.
It is he whose inward witness assures us of its
truth, so that we preach it with conviction.
And it is he who carries it home with power, so
that the hearers respond to it in penitence, faith
and obedience.
40. Demonstrated Gospel

understood.
