Jesus heals various illnesses and conditions. The presentation discusses Jesus healing Peter's mother-in-law of a fever, exorcising demons, and healing all who were sick. It explores the routine of Jesus seeing and healing both physically and spiritually. Reasons for healing included bearing our sins and living righteously. Responses to healing included serving Jesus, leaving him, thanking him, and seeking him. The greatest sickness is sin, and physical sickness sometimes helps cure sinful habits. Maintaining a focus on healing souls rather than just bodies is important.

OBJECTIVES
To understand:
• Various types of
healing Jesus can
give
• Why he bore our
sins/ sicknesses
• Attitudes to
receive complete
healing
• How we can help
others get healed
5. BIBLE PASSAGES
14 When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s
mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. 15 He touched her
hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait
on him.
16 When evening came, many who were demon-possessed
were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word
and healed all the sick. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken
through the prophet Isaiah:
“He took up our infirmities
and bore our diseases.” Matthew 8
Also read Mark 1:29-34, 3.7-12; Luke 4:38-42; 6.17-19
7. ROUTINE OF HEALING
• He saw and
healed – Peter’s
mother in law
• Some were
brought
• Others came –
from long
distance to hear,
to be healed
• Some reached
out
9. ROUTINE OF HEALING
We could apply levels of
faith here:
• For His disciples, He
is watching and
proactively healing
• Some reach out,
knowing his power,
yet feeling
inadequate to talk to
him
• Others come – to
hear, to be healed
• Those who cannot
come on their own
are brought
13. JESUS HEALS
REASONS FOR HEALING
One objective –
that we may die to
sin and live to
righteousness
One means –
bearing our sin on
his body
One outcome -
salvation
14. REASONS FOR HEALING
SICKNESS OF SOUL
24 He himself
bore our sins in
his body on the
tree, that we
might die to sin
and live to
righteousness. By
his wounds you
have been healed
1 Peter 2
15. REFLECTION
“Our sins are
called our griefs
and sorrows
because all our
griefs and sorrows
are owing to our
sins and our sins
deserve all our
griefs and sorrows,
even those that are
most extreme and
everlasting.” [1]
16. REFLECTION
Though the best
of us deserve the
worst of suffering,
God uses this
necessary evil to
purify every one
of His children.
No sorrow needs
to be wasted in
His Kingdom for
His children
17. REVELATIONS ON HEALING
God is primarily concerned about healing from sin
The worst agonies of physical sickness is a weak reflection
of the worst sickness - sin
Most of us (even believers) progressively realize our sinful
state
Often physical sickness helps cure sinful habits
Spiritual healing is available to all
Some are unable to help themselves. We need to seek and
help such people
18. REVELATIONS ON HEALING
Many Christians are diverted into caring for bodies, without
realizing they are completely neglecting souls
Many Christian institutions have reduced themselves into
feeding and educating with weak spiritual focus
Most religions do the above services
While physical needs shout at us loudly souls are silently
screaming and dying
To meaningfully serve, caring for body should result in
caring for the soul
19. DISCUSSION
1. What strikes you about Christ’s healing
approach?
2. How can we maintain focus on souls and retain
SOUL VISION? Take examples from situations
around.
3. What attitude towards healing should we have?
29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. 31 So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.
32 That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. 33 The whole town gathered at the door, 34 and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was. Mark 1
7 Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake, and a large crowd from Galilee followed. 8 When they heard about all he was doing, many people came to him from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, and the regions across the Jordan and around Tyre and Sidon. 9 Because of the crowd he told his disciples to have a small boat ready for him, to keep the people from crowding him. 10 For he had healed many, so that those with diseases were pushing forward to touch him. 11 Whenever the impure spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”12 But he gave them strict orders not to tell others about him. Mark 3
38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one, he healed them. 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.
42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. Luke 4
17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon, 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried to touch him, because power was coming from him and healing them all. Luke 6
He saw and healed – Peter’s mother in law
Some were brought
Others came – from long distance to hear, to be healed
Some touched
Ask
He touches those who come to him
Others are helpless and need to be brought
Others reach out
25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
(2.) Our sins are our sorrows and our griefs (Isa. 53:4), or, as it may be read, our sicknesses and our wounds: the LXX. reads it, our sins; and so the apostle, 1 Pet. 2:24. Our original corruptions are the sickness and disease of the soul, an habitual indisposition; our actual transgressions are the wounds of the soul, which put conscience to pain, if it be not seared and senseless. Or our sins are called our griefs and sorrows because all our griefs and sorrows are owing to our sins and our sins deserve all our griefs and sorrows, even those that are most extreme and everlasting.
Matthew Henry’s commentary
Though we often waste them by incorrect response and lack of faith
