1. SPANISH VERBS & CONJUGATION
High School Spanish Levels 1-Advanced
Rebecca Harper Winter/Spring 2014
2. One of the many challenges of
teaching a Foreign Language is
creating authentic situations for
students to practice their verbal
skills. Technology, when
implemented appropriately, can
be an extremely useful tool in
developing lessons to help
students practice and master a
language.
RATIONALE FOR TECHNOLOGY
INTEGRATION
This presentation will share websites, blogs, programs, videos,
graphic builders, and more that can be integrated and utilized
by teachers and students in and out of the classroom.
3. INTERNET CONTENT
Each resource present as been reviewed and used by other
educators and has shown to be reliable and effective.
Please note that these are suggestions and how you utilize
and incorporate these resources, or not, in your classroom
depend on your individual teaching style, comfort with the
material and site, as well as the needs of your students.
All material is referenced and cited below in the Notes
section of this presentation.
Click on graphics to link you through to individual sites.
7. INTERNET RESOURCES:
Real Academia Espanola Is the website dedicated to the Spanish
language in Spain where a board comes together each year to
pick new words to enter into the Spanish Dictionary or to
change any grammar. This site, and any of the other Spanish
Academies throughout the Spanish-speaking world would help
students find words and use a site in the target language.
SpanishDict is an online Spanish dictionary, verb conjugator,
and grammar reference. Students could use this as a dictionary
to help define and translate any verbs as well as review how to
conjugate. In addition, there are lists of frequently used verbs
and resources to identify and practice irregular verbs.
Conjugemos is an site where students can practice conjugating
verbs by playing a game that gives a certain amount of time to
conjugate as many verbs as possible correctly. You can refine
what types of verbs, the amount of time, etc. based on what you
need to practice.
8. This graphic
organizer was
created using
Inspiration Software
yet there are many
programs and apps
that can create a
similar GO (i.e.
Lucidchart via
Google Apps)

9. TEACHING MATERIAL:
WORKSHEET
A table, made with Microsoft Word, can be used to help
students practice conjugating verbs using different verbs
and subject pronouns. This allows students to see how to
manipulate verbs from the infinitive form into conjugated for
and then the translation from English- Spanish. Every
student would get multiple sheets with this table in order to
practice as much as needed.
Infinitivo:
Radical/Raíz:
Singular Plural
Yo
Tu
Él, ella, usted
Nosotros/as
Vosotros/as
Ellos, ellas, ustedes
10. TEACHING MATERIALS: CARTOONS
Here are sections of two cartoons created by Zachary Jones
to help explain when and how to use the verbs “to be” in
Spanish: Ser y Estar . Info graphics and cartoons and be
made using Visually, Infogram, Easelly, Piktochart.
11. TEACHING MATERIAL:
INFO GRAPHICS
Info graphics, as shown below, are great visual aids to help
students, especially visual learners, understand what subject
pronouns are, why they are important when in verb conjugation,
and the patterns behind conjugating verbs.
12. TEACHING MATERIAL: APPS
Many Apps for Smartphones or
Tablets can be used to enhance
classroom learning. Pictured are
Livemocha, which connects
students worldwide to language
learners and native speakers,
SpanishDict is a dictionary and
grammar reference, and
VoiceThread, which allows teachers
to pre-select pictures and have
students record/narrate what the
pictures show.
13. SUBJECT-SPECIFIC
WEBSITES
The following sites are dedicated solely to Spanish and
include a wide variety of lessons, activities, and ways to
practice vocabulary and grammar. I would specifically point
out or incorporate the section on Conjugating Verbs to
supplement my lesson(s) and offer my students another way
of learning the concept and more options to practice.

14. USING THE INTERNET:
SKYPE
By using SKYPE in the classroom I would be able to have
students connect with each other using laptops and
headphones to allow them to speak directly to each other in
the target language. They would not only practice speaking
in the language but they could also help explain to each
other various concepts, i.e. verb conjugation, via Skype.
Also, with the ability to connect to anyone around the world,
we could utilize Skype to connect with another classroom
within the US or elsewhere in the world to practice our
language skills. If we linked with another classroom
elsewhere and followed a similar curriculum we could have
students practice using vocabulary and verb conjugation for
each unit.
15. USING THE INTERNET:
VOICETHREAD
VoiceThread is a remarkable program that allows teachers
to compile a series of pictures and then ask students to
describe what is happening. This is a perfect way to have
students use their language skills. Each series could be
used to focus on utilizing different vocabulary, verb tenses,
verb moods, prepositions and more!

16. WEB 2.0 SMART BOARD
LESSONS
Using SMART technology teachers can create their own
lessons and then share those lessons on the SMART
website. This is a great interactive tool to engage students
as well as a way to collaborate and utilize other teacher’s
resources/lessons. Here are some Smart Board activities
related to Verbs and Conjugations:
Above is an image of a blog written by a future teacher who is in the midst of her student teacher and working with her cooperating teacher to collaborate. An activity she uses called “quiet ball”, explained further on the site, helps students practice conjugating verbs using different verbs and pronouns. Her blog provides a number of interesting and engaging lessons and activities for Spanish classrooms.

Here is a picture of a website dedicated to teaching the Spanish language through short lessons with podcasts that anyone can download with accompanying videos and “helpsheets”. They offer a variety of social media sites to link with any forum you are a part of (Skype, iTunes, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) The lesson pictured is on Verb Conjugation.

Khan Academy was founded by Salam Khan after his experience being a tutor and making videos to explain concepts. He realized that the students not only enjoyed his videos but also were grasping the material. As a result, Khan developed an international website dedicated to instructional videos with a range of subjects and now in various languages.
Above is a screen shot of Khan Academy Español. Here students can listen to videos in the target language, in this case Spanish, which allows them to hear the language in different contexts.

This GO would help students understand the process of verb conjugation from beginning to end. Typically, in a presentation, like PowerPoint, we go from slide to slide only able to see one slide at a time. Therefore, sometimes it is difficult to show a process and the big picture at once, which we can do as we draw on a chalkboard or dry erase board. However, with a Graphic organizer like the one used here, we can show and reiterate the big picture in a presentation and show the process from start to finish.
