Spanish Tenses
8th Grade Unit
Taylor Rose
Spring 2015
How often have you used a dense
text book and relied on memorization to
learn? Well, it happens all too often and
many students experience frustration
and a loss of enthusiasm for the subject.
Language requires learning that is
preceded by a sensation. Since the
classroom has its boundaries, technology
introduces an invigorating way to
successfully immerse students in a
different culture without ever having to
leave the classroom. This presentation
will show you how technology can offer
interactive exercises that allows students
to strengthen their reading, writing and
oral skills without having to do tedious,
monotonous exercises.

This Podcast is by Gordon Smith and Cynthia

learning levels throughout their website called
Lightspead Spanish. In this Podcast Gordon and
Cynthia discuss a story in the past that provide
examples of when to use both the imperfect and
the preterit tenses.
Teachers can play podcasts in their classrooms
for students to hear these tenses being used in daily
conversations.
Click the microphone to listen to the Podcast!

Kidspiration
Teaching Materials
Worksheets don’t
have to be dull, they
can be engaging. This
particular worksheet
is a crossword puzzle
that focuses on
Irregular verbs in the
past tense. Teachers
can use this as an
exercise to begin the
class or even a short
quiz.
Duolingo is an extraordinary app that can be
accessed through the computer or smart phone. This
app has been modified to fit a classroom setting where
teachers can add their students and measure their
progress. Click the owl to access the website!
SMART Board Activity
Teachers can use this game
for a review session on
tenses, vocabulary, and
grammar and create
questions that allow the
students to enhance their
listening, oral and speaking
skills in the target
language. Students can
gather and work

Subject-Specific Internet-based
Resources
Span¡sh D!ct website is a reliable source for instant
translation. As teachers are trying to integrate technology
more into the classroom it may be useful to allow students
to use their cellphones through the the Spa¡nish Dict APP.
Uses of the Internet:
Interactive Website
Quizlet offers valuable tools for studying. When
students create flashcards through Quizlet the site
then creates quizzes and games for the student to
study further. Students also have access to
flashcards created by others around the world.
Uses of the Internet:
Online Spanish Audio
 Spotify is a free APP and
website that offers audio
lessons and books in
Spanish ranging from
children’s books to
novels. Students can
utilize this website to
enhance their listening
comprehension skills
when at home and
teachers can incorporate
audio books into their
lessons.
 For this unit, a teacher
could use a children’s
book that allows the
students to hear verbs
being conjugated in a
simple context.
Web 2.0
Socrative is an amazing tool to
assess and visualize student
understanding in the classroom.
With this app teachers can
create quizzes, a quick
question, a race game or an exit
ticket. Afterwards the teacher is
provided with a data report of
each students results. Teachers
can also share their created
assessments with their
colleagues.

Editor's Notes

  1. Students can access his website if they are struggling with studying habits and need some inspiration as learning tenses can be frustrating. Teachers can also utilize his website to incorporate his advice into their lessons. Blog Resource: http://www.strategiesinlanguagelearning.com/blog/
  2. Pinterest is a great website that can introduce teachers to new ideas that will allow students to be actively learning in the classroom. I searched key words like Spanish, Tenses and Activities and a lot of projects and games surfaced. Teachers can use Pinterest for ideas to spice up lessons that can be relatively repetitive and boring. Students can use Pinterest to discover new ideas to study and review. 4. This video was created by using PowToon (www.powtoon.com) which is a free website where you can make your own animated videos and animated presentations. Making unique videos of the various conjugations in Spanish will certainly help students retain the information. Video Source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RuevxWIoCM
  5. This chart was created on Inspiration 9. It is a practice worksheet that can be used during the unit of past tense. The worksheet is a visual organizer for students to separate their thinking. The student first has to read the sentence in English and then decide if the condition of the sentence follows under preterit or imperfect rules. The third box is for the student to translate the same sentence into Spanish, which allows the student to practice -ar,-er and - ir endings as well as vocabulary. The last box is where the student must justify why he or she used the preterit or imperfect. The rules of both preterit and imperfect are on the bottom of the worksheet. Click on the picture to access the Kidspiration website!
  6. Resource: http://bhsd228.schoolwires.net/Page/7250 Even though this resource came from a High School website I still believe an eight grade unit could do it without any issues.
  7. The best part about this app is that if a student has surpassed a level, he or she may test out of it in order to move on to the next lesson. This way students don’t have to sit through a repetitive lesson that other students have not yet mastered. Language App source: https://schools.duolingo.com
  8. Source: http://exchange.smarttech.com/details.html?id=1903b709-c359-4676-a6e2-44aee90b032c
  9. The APP and website provides charts of tenses for every word. This is exceptionally valuable when a student needs verification of a conjugated verb. Students can also enhance their vocabulary by having speedy access to this resource. Full sentences do not translate well and teachers should advise students to only use it as an online dictionary for one and a helpful source for conjugating verbs.
