For our group documentary task, we focused our five minute piece on The Rag Tag
Misfits - a two piece busking band from Liverpool.
They gathered money made from their tour ‘Sing For Your Supper’ and other
busking performances to raise for charity. Raising almost £1500 for local Food-
Banks.
“Who are the Rag Tag
misfits?”
3. In terms of aspirations for our documentary, we wanted to give an insight into the life of a busker, while also
implementing a short structure to the piece that would help engage the viewer on what this band does within a tight
time frame.
- Transition from calm Liverpool locations to busy streets
- Introduction to the band
- The life of a busker
- Their work with food-banks
- Live Performance
We each had individual influences from research we did for our roles, we were able to combine these in our original
treatments. We hoped our documentary would have similar elements to The Archive, Sound City, and other docs that
have a strong focus on music. For ours however, we don’t think an overall main theme was conveyed as well as it
could have been. The overall Direction for the camera work should have had a more consistent look. A broader plan
was needed for a more effective outcome.
Aspirations and Influences
4. As a group, we all put in an equal amount of effort to the production process:
- Communication (Production)
- Identifying individual job roles and sticking to them
- Organisation skills
- Navigation around Avid and Pro Tools
- Improvisation (on the spot ideas)
- Access to locations and people
- Time (footage/Post Production)
- Scheduling conflicts of interview
- Background noise in main interview
- Focus mistakes in camera work
- Absence of clear Direction
- Location scouting for interviews
- Communication (Post-production)

We feel that if we were to produce a Liverpool based documentary again, we would
firstly create and develop a more solid back up plan. We do feel that after the knock back
from our original pitched idea ‘Rise To Parrdom’ we should have put just as much
thought into ‘The Rag Tag Misfits’ in terms of planning and Pre-Production.
On the other hand, we feel that the documentary found its own flow in the end, but not
one we had anticipated in production. ‘Up-lifting’ conventions are shown towards the
conclusion of the doc, and the short montage of buskers help capture the themes The Rag
Tag Misfits talk about during the interview.
The book end shots of calm Liverpool locations help identify the piece as a short
documentary – showing just enough relevant information within the five minutes.
