The role of the Writer
What need to be accomplished in pre- production.
Research into the subject they are writing about-
Types of research which will happen in the preproduction-
 Surveys
 Focus Groups
 Interviews
 Observations
 Experiments
Process that the writers will
make
 Developing your idea
 Form and format (knowing what you want to write)
 Creating the characters
 Beginnings
 Middles
 Ends scenes
 Dialogue
 Rewriting
The Role Of The Writer
 Considering the target audience is key for the writer.
 Aspects such as the language, gender, sex, culture are all
key points to consider when writing a script.
 There is also a fundamental relationship with the director.
 For instance if the writer was present on set and an actor
asked how a line was meant to be acted, the writer would
have more of an idea as he/she initially wrote it.
 Therefore the writer has more power. Some directors do not
like writers on set as this can happen.
 Page lock down is when a page of a script is final, no more
edits or re writes can be made.
Becoming A Writer
Agents
 An agent is useful because they send your manuscript out to see who would like to bid
on a script to use within a film or television program.
 They have more knowledge of the editors and directors than most. An agent knows who
is on the lookout for the next big film script, whose lists are full, and can target their
submissions accordingly.
 Once an agent has matched your work to the right director, they are the professionals
whose job it is to negotiate the best contract for you.
 They handle aspects such as high-volume discounts, territorial rights and electronic
rights.
 Having an agent can be incredibly beneficial for a writer as it means having someone
who’s always ‘on your side’, who is enthusiastic about your writing, and whose desire for
the best deal is for both your benefits.
Royalty Payments
 A payment made to a writer that depends on how many
of their books or scripts have been sold.
 It is a payment made to a company or person that has
invented or developed a product by the company that
sells it or uses the material.
 Without paying Royalty Payments the material
produced by the writer cannot be used.
Presenting A Professional
Script
When sending a script it has to be of a high standard. Aspects which make a
script look professional include:
Clean copy – It has to
be clean, it cannot be a
script which has been
copied so many times it
suffers from poor print
quality and black
blotches. If it has been
presented well then
there is a higher chance
of the script being used.
A writer should not
include a budget,
dream cast list,
resume or graphics.
Length - should be
between 100-120 pages
and pages should be
numbered
A script should
be in 12-point
Courier
Time Management
 Time management is important for a writer because
they will need to be able to meet deadlines successfully
in order to be successful in their work being used and
receiving payment. With time management they will
also be able to produce a large amount of work in a
short amount of time.
Legal And Ethical
Considerations
 Copyright –
 Copyright is a legal right created by the law of a
country.
 It allows the creator of an original piece of work
exclusive rights to its use and how it is
distributed.
 Censorship –
 Censorship is essentially the suppression of
speech.
 Anything that could be considered: Harmful,
Sensitive, or Objectionable.
 Watershed –
 The watershed is a certain time of day (9.00pm)
when only certain programs/films can be
broadcasted after this time on television.
 For example nothing containing: gambling, drug
use, extreme violence, strong language, nudity or
horror.
 Plagiarism –
 Plagiarism is in essence the copying of others
work and ideas.
 ‘Wrongful appropriation’, ‘Stealing and Publication’
Conclusion
Thank you!!
