This document discusses reaching out to love others as Jesus loves us. It notes statistics on poverty, homelessness, victimization, and other social issues. It calls the reader to join in helping address these problems by providing transitional housing, mentors, job training, life skills education, community involvement, and being a stable adult presence for those in need. The goal is to bless the world one person at a time.
There are over 500,000 children in foster care today. And it’s estimated that by the year 2020 there will be 7.2 million children on foster care.
i
But let’s not concentrate on the future, instead let us focus on the present. Right now 25,000 children age out of foster care in the US. (In the state of Texas there are around 29,000 children in foster care,) Annd here in Austin, 2,152 children age out.
These teens will face Poverty. It is estimated nationally that teens leaving state care were twice as likely as other 19 year olds to not have enough money to pay rent or a utility bill and 4 times as likely to report being evicted. This leads them to being homeless. The national average is 25% of teens leaving foster care will become homeless. In the region Austin, TX is in it’s 40%. 40% of teens leaving state care will end up on the streets!(It’s estimated almost 1/3 of the nations homeless adults were once in foster care.)
Many of the women who leave foster care end up a victim of the sex trafficking trade. They are usually approached within the first 48 hours of being on the streets. For them it’s the only way to forseebly get money to remove themselves off the street. The teens also have a 25% chance of joining gangs so they will feel a part of a family, and to receive a sense of safety. This will lead them to become involved in crimes and end up incarcerated.
The girls in foster care are in strong danger of early childbearing. Due to a low self-esteem, the girls will begin to have sexual rrelations at an early age. By approximately 19 years of age nearly half of the girls in foster care will become pregnant. Also, due to constant placements in foster care, 60% of kids in foster care do not get a high school diploma. There are also many other problems, drug and alchol abuse, mental health issues (rates of PTSD are twice as high for foster care alumni than war veterans), and so forth.
But where is God? What role is He playing, and what role is he asking us to play? Our God is the God of the fatherless, and He is ready to be their father. Yet many of these children do not know He is there. He hears their cries and is ready and waiting to answer. These young adults need to know their lord and savior, so they can receive the peace and love that only He can give them.
Together we can be the hands and feet of Christ, showing them God’s love in spiritual and practical ways.
We want to partner with you to help these teens. To provide for them a safe, secure, loving home. A place to grow in faith, to bring people together to share Christ’s love.
Together we can bring young adults to help mentor these teens in a peer to peer relationship,, as well as bringing stable, loving, mature adults to mentor them and share Christ’s love
Together we can teach them life skills, i.e. how to manage their finances. We can bring God’s values and morals to them so they can learn about His loving guidance and direction for them in their lives. We can help them partner with schools if they want to continue their education, or partner them with organizations that can provide job training and placement. Together we can show them a future that is filled with hope, the hope that the Lord gives us.
Together we can show them Joy and Patience by providing monthly outings were they come together as a team and have fun. Together we can show them how Christ’s children enjoy the blessings God has given to us, through hikes, camping, kayaking, and so forth.
Together we can show them the joy and love Christ has for His people by serving others. We can gather the teens together to reach out to the community and serve them as the community has served the teens.
Together, through the power and majesty of our Lord Jesus Christ, we can provide a safe loving place to heal these teens and teach them to grow, so they can become stable, loving, self-sustaining adults. Ones who can know the depth and power of the love God has for them.
Please, won’t you join us!
Because together we can change the world by relying on the power of our faithful God.The world is blessed one person at a time!
