1. Compare and contrast the Trait Approach and the Skill Approach to leadership.
The trait and skill approaches to leadership differ. Traits are consistent patterns of behavior and
thought (Trait Approach Definition | Psychology Glossary | Alleydog.com, n.d.). Skills approach
ability to use skills and knowledge to attain goals or objectives (Skills Approach
DESCRIPTION, n.d.). These approaches emphasize various leadership traits. Unlike the skill
method, which emphasizes acquired competence, the trait strategy emphasizes successful
leaders' inherent qualities. Here are some of the trait approach's and skill approach's biggest
differences:
Trait Approach
It says that good leaders have certain qualities, like knowledge, confidence, charisma, and the
ability to make decisions.
assumes these traits are constant and similar across nations.
The trait method argues that these traits are innate and cannot be taught or improved.
Skills approach
Thinks that training and practice can help build and improve leadership skills.
It implies that good leaders have received training, exercise, and experience to improve.
The Skill Approach claims that anyone can learn and apply leadership skills.
2. At this phase in your leadership development, which makes the most sense. Why?
I think the skills approach is better because it can be taught or acquired over time. How does one
get it if they are not born with it? And that is a question any person would ask.
3. Explain if a skill can be a trait, or a trait can bea skill.
While traits are innate, skills can be developed through practice and instruction. Skills and
certain characteristics are related. Being orderly, responsible, and conscientious may be related
to time management. Active listening may be related to empathy, which involves comprehending
and relating to others' feelings.
Post 2
The trait approach is the study of how leaders remain stable in a situation by studying their
pattern of traits. The trait theory of leadership suggests that certain inborn or innate qualities and
characteristics make someone a leader. (F,2022) The skilled approach is a leader-centered
perspective that emphasizes the competencies of leaders. In the skills approach we shift our
thinking from focusing exclusively on traits to an emphasis on skills and abilities that can be
learned and developed. (Northouse, 2021) The comparison between the trait approach and the
skilled approach is that they both are used for the development of leaders in different ways to
remain effective in their workplace.
In this phase of my leadership development, the approach that makes the most sense to me is the
skilled approach. I believe that I am in the middle of enhancing my skills and knowledge in
leadership in the past few months. It made the most sense because I can relate to this approach. I
apply my skills every day to my assignments, work environment, and personal life.
I believe that skills and traits are interchangeable. A skill can be a trait and a trait can be a skill. I
believe this because both can be developed and enhanced throughout or later in life.
