Sumer learned to use canals to irrigate
crops. They also created new tools
and used new materials. They began
to make tools of bronze (copper and
tin).
For example the city of Sumer had
temples where they prayed. They
needed a place to store and trade
their grain. Sumer also offered many
types of work.

Specialized workers:
Sumerians workers built
houses, made jewelry sewed
clothes or created poetry.
Record keeping:
They used wooden sticks to count.
Later they invented the world’s first
system of writing.
Complex institutions:
Are a group of people who have a specific
purpose. For example their school was an
institution and their army. Sometimes
they used their army to conquer others.
