                                               Speech

Have you ever looked at a logo to a company and wondered, “How in the world

did they come up with that?” As I grew up, I was always found myself starting off

sentences mostly with “Why? What? When? Where? And How?” I always needed to

know the background and details of each little thing. This is how I knew I wanted to have

a career in science in when I was older. In sixth grade, I won a contest on designing and

creating our own candy bar. I made the name, logo, and ingredients. This is when I

discovered I actually have a creative side. These two critical moments helped lead to the

deciding idea for my project. All through out high school I was asked that dreaded

question, “What are you going to be when you grow up?” It was my senior year, in my

psychology class, that I came to the conclusion that I wanted to work in the field of

psychology. Therefore, I decided to learn more about the field and do my senior project

on psychology. I did an experiment to determine what color is most appealing, at first

glance. Psychology is highly based on scientific experiments. Many people don’t realize

that psychology isn’t just about going deep inside your brain and learning about your

dreams. Psychologists actually have to conduct experiments in order to find the results

they’re looking for. Outside of the experiments, psychology can deal with counseling and

putting the psychologist results to reality.
Now I’m going to proceed to tell you about the process I went through in

conducting my experiments and finding results. My project facilitator is Stan Hunsucker.

I was looking for someone who knows a lot about psychology and can inform me with

any questions I might have. I had his psychology class first semester. I had no idea what I

wanted to do my senior project on, until I took Mr. Hunsucker’s class. Along with many

of my peers, I began to learn what psychology was really about. I can be honest and say I

was also unaware that psychology was based solely on experiments. We need many

experiments similar to this one in the class. By having an experience like this, I was well

aware of the preparation of this project. Mr. Hunsucker has been teaching psychology for

many years. Furthermore, by using my in class knowledge, I went through the scientific

method in order to develop the results. With my results, I will do what many psychologist

do with there results, put them to use. I will make a logo for a teacher’s cake decorating

company that she does outside teaching, as my product.

Therefore, along with my facilitator, I developed step by step how I was going to

conduct my experiment, then perform my experiment. I started by performing the first

step in the method, a hypothesis. My hypothesis was, “Will the color people choose,

really be the most noticed color in the end?” Then, my project facilitator and I,

researched information that other psychologist had develop with their experiments. We

did not look for an experiment like mine, but it was good to know some other information

found on colors. Next, I conducted my experiment at a local grocery store. I made a

poster board that had a question at the top that said in brief, understanding words, “Which

color?” I asked the participants in a more detailed form, “At first glance, which color

stands out to you, in a more appealing way?” In the end, with my results, I made a logo
for the cake decorating company “Sweet Cheeks.” As my results, I discovered that Blue

and Red were blatantly the winners. Both colors stayed close to the same amount each,

throughout the experiment.

Although, while starting this process, I can be honest and say that I did encounter a

few obstacles along the way. During the fist semester of this year, I was cheering for

football and competition. Like some may know, those are really time consuming sports

and we practice everyday after school. Also, I was working the days that I wasn’t

cheering. Therefore, it was very difficult for me to get going on this project. Luckily, the

second semester, I became a member of the Work Based Learning program. I was leaving

school two hours early to go to work. Although, I do not work every day of the week.

Then, I was able to work on this project the days I wasn’t working. This really enabled

me to have more time during the days to work on this project and focus on other school

work. I was able to meet with my project facilitator after school, also.

With that said, I also learned new things about myself along the way. From this

project, I have learned that I don’t have to be so shy all the time. I learned that when

approaching people, having confidence, as if I am a professional, can make things a lot

easier. Also, I discovered that if a do put my mind to things, I can achieve them. All

throughout high school I procrastinated on everything. I realized that this project is the

real deal and I need to step my game up. When confronting the participants, I had to talk

in a professional manner. I practiced with my parents on the question I would ask and

how I would approach them. This project led me to further my interest in this career field.

It helped me really get a “hands on” feel for the kind of work I could be doing in the

future. After high school, I plan to major in psychology at Georgia Southern University.
At Georgia Southern, I can actually work in there psychology building and tend to

students on campus that need therapy. Thank you for your time. Do you have any

questions?
