A heart attack occurs when blood flow to part of the heart is blocked or reduced, preventing oxygen and nutrients from reaching heart muscle. This happens because the arteries that supply blood to the heart become narrowed and clogged due to a buildup of fatty deposits called plaque. Symptoms of a heart attack include chest pain or discomfort, pain or discomfort in the arms, back, neck or jaw, shortness of breath, nausea, lightheadedness and sweating.
