Museums around the world are prohibited by their own regulations from
authenticating paintings. They will no longer offer even an informal, oral opinion on

There are numerous private experts on art authenticity but they are often expensive
and cumbersome to deal with. Many have never authenticated anything and
routinely reject any painting they are asked to assess. Some make it a policy to
refuse to look at any newly discovered painting. Others are unprofessional about

updated.
There are laboratories that test pigments or take infrared photographs.
Unfortunately, this is not enough to authenticate a painting. Lab work won't
demonstrate attribution or a host of other significant questions.
