Objectives of the assignment
For this assignment you will be concentrating on developing your research and
drawing skills. Drawing will be used creatively and in an informative manner to
communicate and gather information and generate ideas.
You will work from both primary and secondary sources and Include thought pooling,
a variety of mark-making and digital techniques such as drawing, Photography,
painting, printmaking, designing, collage, typography, etc.
A range of mediums should also be explored, for example charcoal, oil pastels,
pencils, inks, paints, photography, collage and digital experimentation.
For your research you will investigate David Carson’s work and the Liverpool Biennial.
This will include undertaking research using a variety of information sources such as
libraries, websites, galleries, and exhibitions, then record your findings.
The theme for this assignment will be the biennial. There are many aspects to this
theme so after initial drawing and research activities you will need to find a personal
direction of study. Things to consider could be:
• Poster design
• David Carson’s Style
• Biennial Artists and their work
• How the information can be visualised on a poster
• How you can develop your ideas using text, font or visual elements. Colours,
materials or photography
• Typography
• Legibility
2. Assessment
This will be a formative assessment. You will have other opportunities later in the
year to address all the criteria for units 7 and 1.
You will need to produce for assessment
Thought Pooling of David Carson and the Liverpool Biennial (Unit 7: P1, P2 and P4).
(Unit 1: P1 and P2).
A range of drawings from a variety of sources including: direct observation and digital
research. (Unit 7: P1, P2 and P4). (Unit 1: P3).
A set of drawings that communicate own ideas through choice of subject and the safe
use of a range of materials, processes and techniques. (Unit 7: P1, P2 and P4). (Unit
1: P3).
Annotation in rough work and/or notes that show correct use of appropriate technical
terms for the formal elements, materials and techniques used in own work. (Unit 7:
P1, P2 and P4). (Unit 1: P2).
Research on David Carson and the Liverpool Biennial and the artist and venues used
(Unit 7: P3). (Unit 1: P1 and P3).
Appropriately and clearly presented research including visual and written records,
photos and notes of planning and what you have achieved. (Unit 7: P5 and P3). (Unit
1: P3).
A mood board of David Carson’s work to illustrate visually the direction and style
which you are pursuing, including his name, his career, quotes by and about him and
visual elements from what you consider his best work in a collage format. (Unit 7: P1,
P2 and P4). (Unit 1: P2 and P3).

You will be informed of the criteria you have achieved within two weeks of you handing
in work for assessment.
