3. Objective of the Study
►To find out the associated factors of maternal common mental disorders (CMD) in an urban slum area
of Bangladesh.
4. Background
The prevalence of maternal CMDs
Bangladesh (49%)
Neglected public health problem
Poor mental health reduce mother’s capability
Mental health is associated not only with
biological factors but also socioeconomic and
environmental factors.

Data
Collection
• Structured questionnaire based on Self-Reporting Questionnaire-20 (SRQ-20) was used for
data collection
• Face-to-face interview
• Measurement of the height and weight of child and mother.
Research
instruments
• The SRQ-20, a screening tool was used to assess mental health of the mothers.
• Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) was used to measure household food
security.
• Modified Kuppuswamy’s socioeconomic status scale was used to assess socioeconomic
status.
• Child nutritional status was estimated using z-score and maternal undernutrition with
body mass index (BMI).
Statistical
Method
• Statistical software SPSS version 21 was used for data analysis
• Logistic Regression
• Bivariate analysis was used to find out the association.
7. Results In a Nutshell

Serial
Number
Characteristics Result
08. Respondents with low socioeconomic status 64.4%
09. Respondents with moderately food insecure 52.7%
10. Respondents with food secure state 12.9%
11. The monthly family income of the respondents range 2000 BDT - 50,000 BDT
12. Respondents with nuclear family 83%
13. Respondent’s family member range 3 - 12
14. Sex distribution ratio of the children 1: 1.2
9. Table 2: Factors Associated with Maternal CMD
Serial
Number
Associations Result
01. Common mental disorders (CMD) 46.2% and 122 in Number
02. Association between socioeconomic status and maternal mental health in
univariate analysis
Positive
03. Association between maternal CMD and lower socioeconomic class Positive
04. Mothers were likely to suffer from CMD in moderately food insecure families 5 times increased odds than in food secure
families
05. Mothers were likely to suffer from CMD severely food insecure families 12 times increased odds than in food secure
families
06. Association among age, sex and illness of the child Negative
08. Association between child nutrition and maternal CMD Significantly positive with enrich OR of 2.51
09. Association between of the underweight child and mothers suffering from CDM Significantly positive with enrich OR of 2.61
10. Association between underweight mothers and poor mental health of mothers Significantly positive with 2.5 times increased
odds
10. Strength
There was minimal physical, mental or socioeconomic risk
or harm to the respondents was involved in this study.
Approval of ethical review committee of National Institute
of Preventive and Social Medicine (NIPSOM), Bangladesh
was taken to conduct the research project.
There used multiple variables to analyze the associations.
BMI and Z-score were use for measuring nutritional status
respectively mothers and children.
11. Weakness
Data were collected based on recall of the mothers, there may
present recall bias.
Sample size is small this may not represent real scenario.
The association found does not reflect causal association.
SRQ-20 is a screening tool to assess mental health used in this
study, not a diagnostic one.
Convenience sampling technique was applied to recruit the
respondents, which limits the generalizability of the results to
other population.
12. Conclusion
Higher prevalence of
maternal CMD
Bangladesh (49%)-2014
Bangladesh (46.2%)-2017
The best predictors of
maternal mental health
-Household food security
-Maternal nutrition
Maternal mental health as
a public health problem
13. Recommendation
Further research should take place with larger sample size for real scenario.
Steps should be taken to solve the associated problematic factors arise in
this study.
Further modification of the study for real reflection of causal association.
