At my internship at the Pediatric Developmental Center, I
     developed a six-week curricuulmfor a social therapy group,
    Horizons II. The group is aimed at developing social skills in
middle-school age children who have developmental delays like
Autism, ADHD, and Asperger's. Each week features a theme and
      consists of five parts: Greetings, Rec Time, Team Meeting,
 Group Activity, and Goodbyes. During the Team Meeting part,
      the theme of the week is used to teach the children an age
              appropriate skill they need to work on developing.
Week 1
Theme: Peer Pressure
Goals:
 Learn what negative & positive peer pressure are
 Learn it’s okay to say “no” to peer pressure when they know it’s not right or don’t want to
 Learn to be nice when saying “no”

Greetings: Put names on board, say “hello” to everyone
           Ask question of the day

Rec Activity: Twister

Team Activity: Social Skills (lesson 49, p. 146)
 Read lesson & examples
 Use pictures of activities/ yes & no cards
 Ask each child a question where answer is no (see suggested questions)
 Ask each child a question where answer may be yes or no
 Role-plays

Group Activity: Headbands game

Goodbyes
Week 2
Theme: Protect Yourself
Goals:
 Increase personal knowledge & awareness of protective skills at home & in the
  community
 Promote interaction by sharing viewpoints

Greetings: Put names on board, say “hello” to everyone
         Ask question of the day

Rec Activity: Bean Bag Toss

Team Activity: Group Exercises (#44, p. 93)
 Use #s 3,4,5,7,8,9,10,11,13,15 & ask what the kids think
 You should do (may give 2 options)
 Model examples
Group Activity: Uno

Goodbyes
Week 3
Theme: Acceptable Touching
Goals:
 identify incidents concerning the appropriate touching of others
 Increase awareness of when appropriate touching is acceptable
Greetings: Put names on board, say “hello” to everyone
           Ask question of the day

Rec Activity: Musical Chairs

Team Activity: Group Exercises (#7, p. 13)
 Read lesson, “personal space” talk
 Use behaviors on activity sheet as examples
 Role-plays
Group Activity: Apples to Apples

Goodbyes
Week 4
Theme: Teasing
Goals:
 Be able to demonstrate that they can deal w/ name calling by ignoring the action or
  verbally expressing to the name caller their dislike of the behavior

Greetings: Put names on board, say “hello” to everyone
          Ask question of the day

Rec Activity: Yoga

Team Activity: Social Skills (lesson 31, p. 92), see p. 207 for phrases
 Read story example
 Model the skill
 Role-plays
 Compliments about a partner

Group Activity: Zingo

Goodbyes
Week 5
Theme: Problem-solving by talking
Goals:
 Demonstrate the ability to solve a conflict by not fighting, but talking to the
  person w/ whom they’re involved or by asking a teacher to help settle it

Greetings: Put names on board, say “hello” to everyone
          Ask question of the day

Rec Activity: Hulabaloo

Team Activity: Social Skills ( lesson 28, p.85)
 Introduce story
 Model & role-plays (using a game or toy)
Group Activity: 5 Senses

Goodbyes
Week 6
Theme: Manners (please, may I, thank you)/ Respect
Goals: learn respect for others by using “please, may I, & thank you”

Greetings: Put names on board, say “hello” to
  everyone                                                  Ask question

Horizons ii curriculum
