Tata Steel
 Tata Steel Limited (formerly Tata Iron and Steel Company
Limited, abbreviated as TISCO) is an Indian multinational
steel-making company headquartered in Mumbai and a
  subsidiary of the Tata Group.
 Established in 1907 by Dorabji Tata and is 12th-largest steel
producing company in the world, with an annual crude
steel capacity of 23.8 million tons.
 It has manufacturing operations in countries including
India, China, the United States and the United Kingdom.
Its largest plant is located in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.
 Vision-” We aspire to be the global steel industry
benchmark for Value Creation and Corporate Citizenship”.
Problem Statement
Tata Steel is looking for an original idea that will use any aspect of
digital technology (cloud, mobile, Android etc ) to create an
application or platform that can be integrated with the strategic
  management requirements of the company.

The paper must include the following sections:-

 Identify a need or a gap in the current management architecture of Tata Steel.
Information available in the public domain can be used for this purpose.
 Propose a solution that will show how the current gap can be closed or
  narrowed significantly.
 List benefits that will accrue to the company if it is implemented. Identify
potential problems or difficulties that need to be guarded against.
 Provide rough estimate of costs including people costs that the company
would have to incur as a one time expense and as a regular expense.
Current Scenario
Problem - A
 A lot of time is spent on material handling:-
       - Storage of raw material, semi finished goods and
          finished goods in yards
       - Transportation of Fabricated steel structure to and
from yard to the shipment point
       - Retrieving half fabricated steel structure for re-
          work
 Identifying material in a large stack is a big problem
Problem – B
 Standalone Systems – need for integration and
  collaboration
A: Smart Tagging
Smart tagging using RFID tags
Benefits :
 Identify the location of particular steel material in big
  yards
 Can identify the client name, project details to which the
  material belongs
 Can reduce the theft of material
Results :
 Reduces material retrieval time .
 A large amount of data like design, project details, column
  numbers etc. can be stored
A: Forward Path
 If a part of steel column is lying in a stack for some
number of days, so an automatic mail can be generated
  to the concerned department
 Production/ Planning department may take necessary
  action.
Benefits
 Material reconciliation will be faster
A: RFID Tags
A: Possible Challenges
 RFID System are often more expensive than barcode
system. Though it is very beneficial, it is quite
  expensive to install.
 Although the tags work in harsh environment, the
signals from certain types of tags get affected when
they come in close contact with certain metals or
liquids. Reading such tags becomes difficult and
sometimes the data read, is erroneous.
B: Enterprise 2.0
 Aim employees, customers and suppliers to
collaborate, share, and organize information via Web
 2.0 technologies.

 It provides rapid and agile collaboration, information
sharing, emergence and integration capabilities in the
 extended enterprise
B: Benefits
                                                Interaction
                                            Overcoming Physical
                                                  Barrier

                                                                             Corporate Blogging,
        Intervention Peers &
                                                                                 Knowledge
            professionals
                                                                             Management forums

                      Expertise Location- Corporate Wikis-
                          increases collaboration
                         productivity communication
