1. How will technology be
disruptive within news and
information industry!
NEWS and INFORMATION Retrieval/Processing/Broadcasting
Technology makes it efficient!
Technology makes it faster!
Technology makes it easily accessible!
Presentation created by Anoop Dixith (anoopdix@buffalo.edu).
2. BIG DATA IS UNIMAGINABLY BIG
It’s the era of Big Data:
1. There’s NEWS from every corner of the
world…and beyond.
2. To PROCESS so much content quickly, efficient
information retrieval algorithms should be used.
3. Processing such enormous content needs
sophisticated databases like Hadoop and
technologies like MapReduce rather than
traditional RDBMS databases.
3. PREDICTION and TRENDS
1. It’s NOT enough to provide only the current news
and information to consumers but it’s of highest
priority to PREDICT what’s going to happen next.
2. Predicting the news/information pattern and
trends leads to great insights about the market and
its future.
3. Use of MACHINE LEARNING algorithms enable us
to identify the pattern and the trends. Data follows
a pattern, technology enables us to identify it.
4. ANALYTICS and SUMMARY
1. There’s SO much information that it’s impossible to
figure out which is important and which should be
discarded.
2. ANALYTICS of the data provide us information about
the important aspects and features of our data rather
than the data itself (which is massive).
3. Analytics software and algorithms and summary
generation algorithms (like SUMM.LY) enable us to
discern the data into parts most needed and discard the
part that doesn’t add much value.
5. ACCESSIBLITY
1. Important data/information need to be made easily
accessible, to consumers who matter.
2. Accessibility is made possible by the use of
technology across various platforms.
3. Applications that span across web, mobile, tablets
and Glass help users access the data/information that
matter to them in real-time.
