Does John F Kennedy Use Anaphora In Jfk Inaugural Address
On January 20th,1941 John F. Kennedy employs anaphoras referencing to the people, as well as
biblical allusions to Roman 12:12 and Isaiah 58:6 and antithesis to effectively communicate his
vision for the American people and world peace. John F. Kennedy employs anaphora the incorporate
the people and remind the audience who he is referring to throughout his address. For example, he
repeats "To those" to show that "These people" and " These places" are things that we need to help
and cannot forget about."To thoses people in the huts ", "To those old allies"," To these new states".
In other words, that nation will pledge to help "Those people" in need. In order to imply that
meaning of remembering the people. Kennedy employs an anaphora such as " To those" " To these",
" To our" , to connect with the audience because he is willing to make the commitment as a
president to change the world but he wants to ensure the audience that they need to be able to make
the same commitment as he . In contrast to JFK's commitment and the audience's role in the world
creates an anaphora that applies to the commitments they are both willing to take for a change. ...

Antithesis In The Odyssey
In his adventurous mythological masterpiece, "The Odyssey," Homer uses antithesis to describe the
Cyclopes and his lifestyle. Homer does this in a plethora of examples, but the most prominent
examples are between the monster and the heroes, and the monster and the Gods. The monster is
analogous to the Gods, but only due to the nature of the cyclops. The cyclops is the son of the God
Poseidon. This gives the cyclops immense strength; in an almost inverse relationship, the
intelligence and common sense of the monster is relatively low. It is upon arrival on a strange island
that Odysseus and his crew find a cave. Inside of which is the food and belongings of a one–eyed
man–eating monster named Polyphemus, he is the son on Poseidon, the ... Show more content on

Polyphemus believes himself and his fellow cyclops to be stronger than the Gods. When he states
that "We Cyclopes care not a whistle for your thundering Zeus or all the gods in bliss; we have more
force by far" (Homer 45). It is in this opposing action that Odysseus is stupefied. Odysseus just
threatened the beast with the wrath of Zeus and instead of fear, Polyphemus is resentful towards the
Gods and shows no fear. The surprise is only amplified by the realization that killing Polyphemus
would only entrap Odysseus and his men. Polyphemus had sealed the doorway with a slab of stone
that would take many men and horses to move. Odysseus realized the societal contrast between the
Greeks, who kept the upmost respect for the Gods, and the will of the Gods, and the Cyclopes'
society that lack any acknowledgment of the Gods. The lawlessness of the Cyclopes' home is
unwieldy compared to the strict rule laid out for the citizens of Greece to follow. Opposed to the
confines of Greece, the Cyclops Polyphemus is a lawless shepherd that does as he pleases without
fear of reprehension from the Gods or his lack of official government. The anarchism of the society
is what allows the Cyclops the freedom to eat

The Idea of Antithesis in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet...
The Idea of Antithesis in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet In this essay I am going to look at how
antitheses are a big part and how they are central to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. There are
many antitheses and oxymorons in the play and I will be examining how they are used and how they
drive the play on, entertaining and involving the audience. There are so many examples of opposites
in the play, covering language, characters, scenes and backgrounds, focusing in the main on the
central theme throughout the play of love and hate. The first and main opposite we encounter in the
play is love and hate, in act 1 scene 1 although a trace of all the opposites are always present
throughout the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once they marry they believe they are at the peak of the wheel of fortune, until fate closes in and
makes havoc upon the couple, in the form of Tybalt's anger. 'Therefore do nimble–pointed doves
draw love, and therefore hath the wind–swift cupid wings.' This shows us that the roll of fate
between Romeo and Juliet is expected to turn love into death. Romeo does not want to follow fate
and tries to escape it. "Then I defy you stars". He is displaying his free will and going against fate
but in the play nearly always fate wins over freewill, for example the last scenes where Romeo and
Juliet eventually die. Fate has overpowered their freewill no matter how strong they might be.
Another opposite which features throughout the play is youth and wisdom. For example in act 2
scene 5 between Juliet and the nurse "I would hadst my bones and thy news, nay come I pray thee
speak" Juliet displays her youth and her naivety. She is almost begging for the nurse to speak. This
sort of language you would expect from a young girl who is impatient and "in love". It gives out an
image in which you can see two people bickering away at each other. Shakespeare may have used
the youth of the character to make a stereotypical young person which enlightens the play up, giving
a kind of humorous outcome to the scene because of the differences between a wise and mature
woman

Antithesis
The thesis can be defined as a single idea that brought about antithesis (conflicting idea) due to the
idea's incompleteness, which then resulted in synthesis. The synthesis reconciles the truth in thesis
and antithesis to form a new thesis, which can generate into another antithesis and the process, can
continue until the truth is finally arrived at. In other words, a synthesis is a written discussion that
deduces on one or more sources. There is no doubt that the attack on September 11, 2001, was a
shock to everyone all over the world and with the way the chilling even erupt, no one would be able
to predict where the next attack would take place. Therefore, there was a controversy around the

entire players and their fans. These two articles are similar because they both discussed around the
postponed or called off weekend sporting games, although there were contentions between the
decision made by the two N.F.L. commissioners, Rozelle and Tagliabue 38 years apart. They are
different, in the sense that the Litsky & Williams (2001) analyzed the various major weekend games

Analysis Of Into The Wild By John Krakauer
In the book, Into The Wild, a journalist who was known as John Krakauer tells the story of
Christopher Johnson McCandless, rather known as Alex.
Krakauer's use of stylistic devices throughout his book is quite phenomenal. Just a few examples of
the stylistic techniques that he uses to uncover his tone are: polysyndeton, anaphora, and antithesis.
Krakauer remains indifferent towards Chris for a good 6 chapters, states all the facts, and tells the
story as it is. He uses no emotion appealing words to hint to us how he feels about Chris. His
indifference is shown through his use of polysyndeton, which is the use of several conjunctions
when not necessary. One example of polysyndeton used in Into The Wild is, "Because [McCandless]

His tone starts to become more admiring towards Chris when he states, "if [McCandless] pitied
himself in [his] last difficult hours–because he was so young, because he was alone, because his
body had betrayed him and his will let him down– it's not apparent in the photograph" (Krakauer
199). This shows that despite all the struggles Chris went through in his lifetime he dies peaceful
and happy, when he out of all people, had all the reasons to hate life and have a miserable death. The
repetitive usage of the word "because" lists all the reasons Chris had die upset and un– happy.
Another example of anaphora in Into The Wild is "The marijuana of course only made the tent seem
even more cramped, more suffocating, more impossible to bear" (Krakauer 146). Krakauer uses
anaphora to add symbolism to Chris's memory. "Marijuana" represents nature and how it makes you
feel while the "tent" represents society and how it brings you down. The author starts to show more
emotion towards Chris's decision of living in the wild. His indifferent tone slowly turns into a tone

Phenomenology Of Friedrich Hegel
Gorge Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was born in the year 27th August, 1770, in Stuttgart, Germany. He
studied philosophies and classics at Tubingen. He was a tutor and an editor and explored theology
after his graduation. "The Phanomenologie des Geistes" (The Phenomenology of Sprit) was his first
work being published in 1807. He was the person who propounded the 'Dialectical method'. Which
is usually in a three stages namely thesis (giving rise to its reaction), antithesis (negates the thesis)
and the tension between thesis and the antithesis being resolved by the means of antithesis
(Sparknotes, 2005). In a simple form dialectics method can be understood as problem to reaction
and finally to solution. Hegel was influenced by other philosopher like ... Show more content on

Master–slave dialectic is a process of negotiation and mutual interdependence. Hegel believes that
the consciousness for–the–Master is not an independent but a dependent on slave. According to
Hegel, both master and slave recognize their own existence only in relation of the other. Among the
many implications of the master–slave dialectic, then, is the idea of there being mutual dependence
between master and slave rather than a blanket opposition of dominance to subordination. The slave
ironically shares in the master's power because the master defines himself only in opposition to the
slave; that is, the master needs the slave in order to legitimate his comparative

Antithesis In A Tale Of Two Cities
Throughout the novel, A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens uses powerful contrast to present a story that
reflects the situations in his life, as well as the life of two cities. Best/worst, wisdom/foolishness,
belief/incredulity, light/darkness, spring/winter, hope/despair, everything/nothing; these antithesis
springing up from the first paragraph provide contrasting ideas that highlight the extreme conflict
revealed throughout the novel. Looking at the character motifs, Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton,
in addition to Lucie Manette and Madame Defarge are contrasting characters evolving with the
progressing story. Contradicting scenes between London and Paris set the background for a light
versus dark motif. Dickens' use of contrast through antithesis, character motifs and two different
cities demonstrate the intense conflict, change, and struggle that existed during the French
Revolution. Starting with a chant of poetic anaphoras intertwined with antithesis, "It was the best of
times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the
epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of
Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we
had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way"
(I.I.III), Dickens throws the reader immediately into thought–conflict. Is this going to be good, is

Antithesis In Ronald Reagan's Inaugural Speech
Every four years, American citizens have the opportunity to elect a president and vice–president to
lead their country. Although we have developed an impressive system that allows the people to
choose their president, a problem occurs when the citizens of the United States are divided on who
they desire as president. As 40th president of the United States, Ronald Reagan gave a successful
inauguration speech to the people by using rhetorical devices to address the ways he will fix the
problems of the country. Reagan commences by addressing the opposing side and explains why we
should put aside our differences and unite together to become one country. After addressing the
issue of separation, he adequately uses emotion filled words, factual ... Show more content on

With his triumphant use of antithesis, President Reagan grabs the audience's attention, makes them
think about ideas in multiple viewpoints, and proves to them why he will a successful leader of the
United States. While addressing his intentions on what to do with the government, Reagan
proclaims, "there will be no misunderstanding, it's not my intention to do away with government. It
is rather to make it work –– work with us, not over us; to stand by our side, not ride on our back".
During this section of his speech, Ronald Reagan uses antithesis to contrast the ideas of the
government over powering the people versus having a very minuscule amount of government
action. Because Ronald Reagan successfully used antithesis to show that he did not wish to get rid
of the government or overpower it, it created a stronger statement that allows the citizens to take
into consideration both opposing ideas. The newly sworn in president, then uses anthesis again to
clearly state that we gave the federal government its power by stating, " all of us need to be
reminded that the Federal Government did not create the states; the states created the Federal
Government". This uses antithesis to proclaim to the citizens that the Federal Government will not
overpower the people because the people will be the ones giving the government its power. Overall
these two uses of anthesis helped Ronald Reagan get an audience who was initially against him, to
understand his point of views and why he will be a successful

The Antithesis Of Peace : What Is Peace?
What is peace? Although there are many word definitions of peace Merriam–Webster's dictionary
defines peace as "freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions." Often times the
best way to begin exploring what something is, is to begin be stating what it is not. Therefore, I shall
briefly expound upon peace by examples of what isn't peace. Many times in life we find our mental
state of being to be tumultuous. Everyone has a myriad of experiences and dispositions that make
life hectic. Life is very unpredictable and the circumstances in which one is placed in in life are all
the more out of any man's control. For example, a college student could state this his life is full of
studying for classes late at night and waking up early in the morning to attend lectures, a salesman
could say that his life is full of rushing to financial meetings and stress from worrying about
meeting a sales quota, even a child could find himself lacking peace in his life because he may be
perturbed by not being permitted to do something his parent deems unfit at the moment. All of these
are examples of the antithesis of peace. However, the question still remains: What exactly is peace?
Many philosophers have tried to answer this question throughout history and even scientist have
hypothesized what peace is by analyzing the brain activity of an individual who are "at peace." In
this essay, I shall define what peace is by the definitions set by a few notable philosophers,
scientists, and

How Does Tim O Brien Use Antithesis In The Things They...
In the fictional novel The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien vividly explains the fear and trauma
the soldiers encountered during the Vietnam War. Many of these soldiers are very young and
inexperienced. They begin to witness their acquaintances' tragic demise, and kill other innocent
lives on their own. Many people have a background knowledge on the basis of what soldiers face
each day, but they don't have a clear understanding of what goes through these individual's minds
when they're at war. O'Brien gives descriptive details on the soldiers' true character by appealing to
emotions, using antithesis and imagery.
With this in mind, O'Brien describes many equipment the soldiers carry to the Vietnam War, such as
weapons, sentimental items, food and most significant; their "emotional baggage". He states that

thinking it's over, I'm gone!" The freedom birds brings a sense satisfaction to the soldiers. This
reminds them that they would not be depressed forever and they would not have to deal with their
emotional baggage anymore. Furthermore, O'Brien describes this jumbo jet as if it is a real bird. He
explains its appearance as "a big sleek silver bird with feathers and talons high and screeching", to
explain the beauty of this plane. He uses imagery to emphasize the significance the freedom birds
has on them. O'Brien gives a clear picture to allow readers to understand that even with their
emotional baggage, they still have hope that they will one day be happy

Evil Is The Antithesis Of All Evil
According to the Oxford Dictionary evil is the antithesis of all good; morally depraved, bad, wicked,
vicious (Evil). This definition relies completely on another word: good.
All throughout our history, we have come to label events, object and people as either good or
evil/bad. We tend to believe that the world itself is driven by good forces and evil ones. Since this is
a term we often take for granted, it should not be debatable, and all of us should have the same
concept about it. Sadly enough that is not true. Societies and culture shape our understanding of
evil. Some of the most controversial themes we find in today's news are abortion, the death penalty,
and euthanasia. Perhaps most of us will start by saying that these practices are wrong, but under
certain circumstances they are justifiable. For instance, a girl subject of rape may not be in the
physical, psychological or economical position to raise a child; a cancer patient with a bad prognosis
might feel that the suffering is too much for him, etc. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

And for years, it has been accepted by the minority communities as a way of life for black and

The Rhetorical Analysis Of John F. Kennedy's Address
Despite the memorability of the end of John F. Kennedy's term, the beginning of the presidency,
specifically the inaugural speech, will remain recognized globally. The first impression, the first
address, and the first acknowledgement of John F. Kennedy's presidency is encompassed in his
inaugural speech. With the importance of the speech prominent, Kennedy and his advisors wished to
inspire the nation and send a message of strength and hope to the world. Addressing the American
citizens and the global population, the president expressed the importance of the survival of liberty
and peace. In the first section of Kennedy's speech, the topic of nuclear war and the contrasting
views with communism create an ominous yet hopeful tone. Understanding the preeminence of the
inaugural speech, Kennedy knew to use rhetorical methods to effectively communicate his idea.
Metaphors, archaic diction, biblical language, and antithesis examples are demonstrated throughout
John F. Kennedy's speech to enhance rhetorical appeals and express the importance of liberty and
peace for the future. With regard to communism and the global population, the president utilizes
metaphors to buttress his effort to send a message of strength and aspiration to the country. He
comments on the views of communism and states the United States must not enforce their views
among others, but support freedom for all. John F. Kennedy enhances this idea, stating, "those who

Patrick Henry's Speech Rhetorical Devices
Rhetoric Through Time On September the 11th, 2001 our nation was the victim of a tragic terrorist
attack. A year later nothing had been done about it. Due to this fact, President Bush gave a speech to
congress "President Bush Outlines Iraqi Threat", that was also nationally televised, trying to get the
authority to use military force against Iraq. American Revolutionary Patrick Henry gave a similar
speech "Speech to the Virginia Convention", 227 years earlier, trying to convince Virginia State
Delegates to go to separate from England, although the speeches were given hundreds of years apart
Bush's and Henry's speeches are rhetorically alike in terms of antithesis, pathos, and loaded
language.
While Bush uses antithesis many times in his speech, such as stating, "People everywhere prefer

Bush chose to use phrases such as "...homicidal dictator..." and "...murderous tyrant..." these are
very strong phrases that can easily persuade a listener's point of view. Henry used similar phrases to
characterize the parliament and ministry as the "bad guys". Henry chose to use the phrase
"...tyrannical hands of the ministry and parliament". Using strong words such as "tyrannical" and
"murderous" tugs at the listener's emotions and makes them scared of (in Bush's speech) Saddam
Hussein and (in Henry's speech) Parliament and the Ministry.
With all things considered, both speeches are rhetorically alike. Henry and Bush used similar
rhetorical devices for similar things such as using pathos to create a sense of fear. Also, they both
uses the word "tyrannical" to describe the "bad guy" in their situations. Using antithesis helped
greatly with both speeches by also creating a sense of fear. Using rhetoric is crucial in delivering a

Doctor Yealland In The Antithesis Of Rivers
Authority through Obedience Authority, in general, is manifested through obedience, if nobody
obeys you, you have no authority. There are two main reasons why people obey said authority.
Either they trust their authority figure and agree with the commands they are given, or they fear the
consequences of disobedience. Most French and British men fought for their country because of the
former reason, they believed they were fighting for a just cause; however, in due time, soldiers'
views changed, and they only stayed in light of the consequences of deserting. This juxtaposition
between their fear of death and harm and the impossibility of desertion for survival created a

228) Yealland's view is that any sympathy or understanding shown towards these patients that don't
believe they can be cured will only validate their position of helplessness and make them feel like
their self–pity is justified. Just before this he also says, "The patient has to know when he enters the
electrical room that there's no way out except by a full recovery." (Barker 228) In this way, he forces
his patients to believe they can be cured simply because their torment wouldn't end until they were
well again. When Callan tries to escape the electrical room a second time during his electroshock
therapy, "Rivers couldn't bear to go on watching. He looked down at the backs of his clasped
hands." (Barker 232) Rivers apparently doesn't agree with Yealland's methods but makes no actions

Parallelism In Letter From Birmingham Jail
Many persuasive authors, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and John F Kennedy, utilize a variety of
rhetorical devices to clarify and balance ideas, and to appeal to human emotions. One of the devices
they applied to their literary works was parallelism, which is the repetition of word, phrases,
clauses, or sentences that have the same grammatical structure or the same meaning. The second
device, antithesis, is a form of parallelism that emphasizes strong contrasts. These devices are both
used in "Inaugural Address" by John F. Kennedy and in "Letter from Birmingham City Jail", by
Martin Luther King Jr. to accentuate ideas and create a pleasing cadence.
Although they both use these devices, "Inaugural Address", by John F. Kennedy makes more
frequent use of parallelism and antithesis. In his speech, he uses parallelism quite often, especially
when starting a new paragraph. For example, he started three paragraphs with, "To those....",and
four paragraphs with, "Let both sides...", which brought more attention to his main ideas. He also
used antithesis to add contrast and emphasize his points, for example, "ask not what your country

The fact that JFK just won the presidential election illustrates that this speech is a product of pathos,
he won America over because they trust him. Pathos is a strong element of a writing piece because
once the reader trusts the writer or speaker they are willing to listen to anything they have to offer.
The overall theme in this speech unifies the whole speech. JFK's speech shows a theme of
progression. This is the perfect theme for an innaugural speech because the whole goal of the
country is to progress as a whole once a new president is elected. He shows this theme of rhetoric in
his quote, "We observe today not a victory of party but a celebration of freedom–symbolizing an
end as well as a beginning–signifying renewal as well as change" (JFK). He uses the word, "we"
and "progress" to help signify unity. Repition is combined into the speech to make the theme stand
out. "Let both sides" (JFK). is a start to a few paragraphs in this speech, these three words combine
the two political parties and is the start of progress and teamwork to making this country stronger.
Last but not least, the most important quote in this speech is, "And so, my fellow Americans: ask not
what your country can do for you–ask what you can do for your country" (JFK). This famous quote

Orleans to strengthen his writing career, but he mentions his regret for leaving his lover behind. In a
conversation with Professor William S. Gray, Williams stated, ??the three of us had great fun

conversations over a cool drink on patio, evenings eating at some French Quarter restaurant, then
walking around the colorful streets of the Quarter. These are among the happiest memories of my

inspiration for writing ?A Streetcar Named Desire??. Williams? ?A Streetcar Named Desire? is set
in a poor section of the French Quarter in New Orleans. The reader is immediately introduced to the

The Antithesis Of Mrs. Podsnappery
First off, I have decided to approach this critique with less of a rant about my misunderstanding of
Our Mutual Friend by Charles Dickens. My past critics have dragged on with complaints, though, I
tried much harder in attempting to understand and analyze Book One Chapter XI–XIII as to be able
to write a more analytical, rather than full–of–complaints, response. Starting with Chapter XI, I
really thought the title to be clever, "Podsnappery". I understood this chapter the best, in my
opinion. From what I've read, I perceive Mr. and Mrs. Podsnap to be the antithesis of Mr. and Mrs.
Boffin. Both families/couples have come into great amounts of wealth, as of recent, yet, react in
very different ways. As we talked about in class, the Boffins ... Show more content on

Chapter XII addresses this from the opposite side with the discussion of the working class. The
"fruits of my brow" and "...but is it a sin for a labouring man that moistens every crust of bread he
earns". This chapter, along with Chapter XI and the Podsnaps and Chapter XIII and Lizzie and her
father, is a main showcase of the great chapter organization and structure that Dickens provides to
show opposing sides of the story. The chapters in the book thus far seem to reverse often from the
wealthy to the working class or from one contract to another wherein Dickens' audience is given the

Jfk Inaugural Address Rhetorical Analysis
President John F. Kennedy spoke to all of the American people on January 20, 1961 at his inaugural
address to establish his main goals on what he is going to do during his presidency. Kennedy has
established a patriotic yet inspirational tone most likely to make the people feel more united.
Kennedy starts his speech to his fellow American citizens by suggesting that all of the American
people must come together and unite in order to overcome the harsh times after the Cold War.
Kennedy uses long sentences in order to add character and strength to his speech. John F. Kennedy
uses words such as "freedom", "renewal", and "nation" in order to make the American people have a
feeling of hope and unity. John uses his crafty diction and syntax to help him present himself as a
true leader and add to his integrity. The very complex and patriotic syntax and diction display a
supportive mood and reassurance to the audience. Throughout the speech the president uses many

Example Of The Hegelian Dialectic
1 Hegelian Dialectic: a step by step guide to controlling an outcome.
A dialectical (Divided) method of argument by 19th Century German philosopher, G.W.F. Hegel. It
is a method Comprised of Thesis, antithesis, and synthesis.
The Hegelian Dialectic. A process where the contradiction between the Thesis and Antithesis
resolves to a higher level of truth, the synthesis. Also knows as the Problem, Reaction, Solution.
Its getting to the truth by exchange of logical arguments. When manipulating this method a person
or group of people are swayed to chose a desired outcome. Understanding is the first step to
controlling. This formulaic trick moves groups of people. It is how we get many major changes in
our society.
One guy lights his shoe on fire; now everyone removes their shoes at the airport.
One guy lights his underwear on fire; most everyone gets body scanned. (Opting out is purposefully

Presenting the extreme cases govern the majority. It is why the defense against a critical thinker is
often grouping them with a exaggerated caricature. "Do you Hate America?" This polar opposite
takes the spotlight off the subject of debate.
When you question claims in the mainstream. You are a "Science Denier". But, as when science said

Brutus And Mark Antony Speech Analysis
In William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, both Brutus and Mark Antony provide moving funeral
speeches in hopes to sway the crowd towards their opinion. Brutus makes an attempt to assure the
Roman people of his own innocence and justify the murder of Julius Caesar. Adversely, Mark
Antony offers a speech to counter that of Brutus and act as the defense for Julius Caesar. While both
speeches are sufficient in swaying their audience, Antony is able to use both pathos and antithesis
more effectively and his use of the devices enables him to provide a far more compelling speech.
Brutus attempts to use pathos to stir the crowd and develop empathy. In his speech, Brutus declares,
"As Caesar loved me, I weep for him". Brutus' use of this strategy was less effective than Antony's
because he focuses too much on his own emotions than trying to manipulate his fellow Romans'
emotions. His lack of focus on the others' emotions prevented him from using this device
effectively. Though Brutus makes an attempt to gain his audience's sympathy, he fails to do so.
Mark Antony's speech also provided use of the rhetorical device pathos in order to sway the citizens
of Rome to his side. His most prominent use of this rhetorical device is when he sobs, "Bear with
me; My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, And I must pause till it come back to me". In saying
this, Mark Antony allows for the Romans to empathize with him and gives a pause for them to think
for a moment and feel pain with him. By trying to provoke emotion in the citizens of Rome, he
creates a better use of the rhetorical device than his fellow Roman. Antony's use of pathos was
innumerably better than Brutus'. Antony connects to the citizens of Rome and allows for them to
empathize with him. However, though Brutus provides emotions in his speech, he does not provide
the same connection and his attempt to appeal to his audience's emotions falls short. Antony
demonstrates how strongly he feels by weeping over the body of Caesar. Brutus, however, reveals
his emotions by plainly stating that he feels remorse, thus preventing the Romans from empathizing
with him. In addition to pathos, Brutus' speech offers a weak example of antithesis. He uses
antithesis to invoke

How Does Joseph Conrad Use Antithesis In The Hollow Men
God had several reason for sabotaging the tower and scattering his people. The first one addressed is
because man shared one language and one speech; this may concern him because he wants them be
more diverse. Bricks were used instead of stone, the bricks symbolize an advance in technology and
a growth in knowledge. He separated man because he believed they had grown to powerful,
knowing that "nothing they do is impossible" (Genesis 11:6) and that they may grow too conceited
and stray from God's sight.
The builders of Babel and The Company's slaves both share a common tongue. They both bring
about their own demise by their own work, though unintentional. They slaves are exploited for work
by the Europeans who essentially destroy their culture in the process of making them more "civil".

The Hollow Men by T.S. Eliot shares quite a number of similarities with Joseph Conrad's The Heart
of Darkness, The first which is will discuss is literary elements. There is an instance of antithesis in
The Hollow Men, "Shape without form, shade without colour" (Eliot, lines 11–12). Marlow uses
identical phrasing when describing the Eldorado Expedition "reckless without hardihood, greedy
without audacity, and cruel without courage" (Conrad, 38). It is noteworthy that both stories use this
device to describe a lacking, the flaws in men. both have several common symbols: broken items,
shadows, and death. Broken objects, like the stones of The Hollow Men or the railway car of Outer
Station, symbolize destruction and waste; the greed and exploitation of the men around them. The
shadow alludes to Marlow's visions of Kurtz, both of which limit man's progress. Most important of
them all, death. Death is a very obvious symbol, but its effects are not as clear, the moral crisis it
causes in Marlow and the lack thereof for Kurtz is concerning, their is also the depression it causes

Analysis Of Anaphora In Macbeth
Anaphora Definition: An anaphora utilizes the purposeful repetition of the first part of a sentence or
phrase. Anaphora can be traced back to Biblical times for its usage. It became a more common
rhetorical device during the Elizabethan era. (LiteraryDevices) Function: An anaphora functions to
create emphasis. By repeating the first part of a sentence, that specific idea stands out in the reader's
mind. Anaphora can be used to draw attention to an word or idea. It also can compel readers to
visualize said word by evoking emotions or certain ideas that may be implied through the device.
Published Sample: Anaphora is used several times in Macbeth. In one instance, a nobleman named
Macduff attempts to persuade Malcolm, the rightful ruler of their kingdom, to return to Scotland and
overthrow the present tyrant. Macduff describes how "each new morn, new widows howl, new
orphans cry, new sorrows strike heaven on the face" (Shakespeare 4.4.3) to show the persisting
chaos evoked by Macbeth. Published Sample Analysis: In this scene of Macbeth, Macduff is
describing the horrors Scotland is enduring under Macbeth's wrath. By repeatedly emphasizing on
the 'new' aspect of these prolonged disasters, the reader, along with Malcolm, gains sympathy for
the people suffering. The repetition of this word highlights how tragic the situation seemed to be and
how there was no sign of it stopping. The anaphora is also used to imply the person responsible for
Scotland's perish. The constant reference to increased death and chaos provides the implication that
Macbeth is directly responsible. This, in turn, redirects to how excessive ambition affects a person.
In this case, Macbeth allowed his ambition to overpower his life, which resulted in the death of his
wife and the destruction of an entire kingdom. The author is able to emphasize this effect through an
anaphora that describes the continuous suffering Scotland faced. Citations: Shakespeare, William.

The American Crisis Number 1 Rhetorical Devices
Rhetoric is a way of persuasive wring or speaking, including the use of figures of speech and other
writing techniques. An example of a speech that includes Rhetoric would be "The American Crisis

Paine's writings were very passionate and inspiring, but they also reflected his life. In the speech
"The American Crisis Number 1" by Thomas Paine a strong message is delivered to American
soldiers through his use of alliteration, personification and antithesis. There are many different uses
of Rhetorical devices in this speech including alliteration. Alliteration basically means several words
in a sequence with the repetition of the same sound. One example of alliteration in this speech
would be "These are the times that try men's souls." He starts off the speech with that sentence and
use of alliteration. Another example of alliteration in this speech would be "The summer soldier and

Rhetorical Devices In Jfk Inaugural Speech

devices throughout the speech to clarify his message. The message Kennedy is trying to get across is
that people should unite together and become peaceful with one another and other nations. In the
speech, Kennedy uses the rhetorical devices alliteration, anaphora, allusion, and antithesis. The use

enhances the impact of the speech by creating a rhythm. For example, the "s" sound in "same

alliteration was used in his speech, establishes a mood. By setting the mood, the reader may feelings

Antithesis In Hamlet
Hamlet's façade of madness enables his cunning use of words and acting skills that led to the
revealing of Claudius's guilt. But when the opportunity arises to exact his revenge, Hamlet's mask of
madness is off and his true–self hesitates to finish what he desired. Shakespeare's use of antithesis,
the change from verse to prose, dramatic irony, and sudden contrasting tone changes highlight
Hamlet's inner conflict of being real or mad, inhibiting his ability to commit to either revenge or to
his past, leading to his downfall. Thus, Shakespeare demonstrates how the desire for revenge can
ruin any mentally stable person as it will make them mentally insane. While Claudius and Polonius
hide, Hamlet attempts to keep his appearance of madness with Ophelia, but his true feelings for her
pour out. Through Hamlet's creation of an antithesis and a paradox between "beauty" and "honesty"
in verse, he continues to confuse and demonstrate his madness to Ophelia as shown by her replies in
the form of interrogative sentences (quote act 3 scene 1 105–117). His inability to be clear with
Ophelia demonstrates how detrimental his mother's marriage with Claudius was in breaking his
trusting with others. But when Ophelia continually submits to his hurtful insults from his facade,

well as inspiring people all across the nation, and it really led to the opposite of being drawn into
himself, as he described in the quote above. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 14

His first major work upon returning to America was "Symphony for Organ and Orchestra" which he
wrote just for the few performances of Nadia Boulanger; the first one in Carnegie Hall in 1925 and
another in Boston. As the twenties roared on, Copland began to show how his musical career would
truly follow the ever–changing style of America. During the 1920's, Aaron Copland went with the
trend and experimented with jazz styles in his music, which proved to be extraordinary in the views
of many. His choice for other pieces came through modern music about which he once said, "I just
happened upon it in the natural course of my musical exploration." This was apparent in the way he
would use ideals of Neoclassicism in his "Piano Variations." Copland then hit a downfall in about
1936. He wrote a few works which were harder to perform and not taken in by many audiences due
to the use of much more advanced techniques which were uncommon for the time. Copland knew a
change had to be made because he quickly saw how many composers were working themselves into
a vacuum, so he would follow a new path of the more simplistic American way for much of his life.
This "simple to understand" type of writing is what brought audiences back and made Aaron
Copland great. He started writing functional music like "The Second Hurricane" and "The Outdoor

down in a tragic effort to live in monologue rather than dialogue."Through manipulation of pathos
King demonstrated the South had become dominated by the white man's proclamation that shredded
away the freedom of opinion from the darker skinned. Result of having claimed jurisdiction of the
South by the infringement of African American rights the whites gained ,unconditional, superiority.

JFK Uses Anaphora and Biblical References in His Inaugural Address

  • 1. Does John F Kennedy Use Anaphora In Jfk Inaugural Address On January 20th,1941 John F. Kennedy employs anaphoras referencing to the people, as well as biblical allusions to Roman 12:12 and Isaiah 58:6 and antithesis to effectively communicate his vision for the American people and world peace. John F. Kennedy employs anaphora the incorporate the people and remind the audience who he is referring to throughout his address. For example, he repeats "To those" to show that "These people" and " These places" are things that we need to help and cannot forget about."To thoses people in the huts ", "To those old allies"," To these new states". In other words, that nation will pledge to help "Those people" in need. In order to imply that meaning of remembering the people. Kennedy employs an anaphora such as " To those" " To these", " To our" , to connect with the audience because he is willing to make the commitment as a president to change the world but he wants to ensure the audience that they need to be able to make the same commitment as he . In contrast to JFK's commitment and the audience's role in the world creates an anaphora that applies to the commitments they are both willing to take for a change. ... • 2. Antithesis In The Odyssey In his adventurous mythological masterpiece, "The Odyssey," Homer uses antithesis to describe the Cyclopes and his lifestyle. Homer does this in a plethora of examples, but the most prominent examples are between the monster and the heroes, and the monster and the Gods. The monster is analogous to the Gods, but only due to the nature of the cyclops. The cyclops is the son of the God Poseidon. This gives the cyclops immense strength; in an almost inverse relationship, the intelligence and common sense of the monster is relatively low. It is upon arrival on a strange island that Odysseus and his crew find a cave. Inside of which is the food and belongings of a one–eyed man–eating monster named Polyphemus, he is the son on Poseidon, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Polyphemus believes himself and his fellow cyclops to be stronger than the Gods. When he states that "We Cyclopes care not a whistle for your thundering Zeus or all the gods in bliss; we have more force by far" (Homer 45). It is in this opposing action that Odysseus is stupefied. Odysseus just threatened the beast with the wrath of Zeus and instead of fear, Polyphemus is resentful towards the Gods and shows no fear. The surprise is only amplified by the realization that killing Polyphemus would only entrap Odysseus and his men. Polyphemus had sealed the doorway with a slab of stone that would take many men and horses to move. Odysseus realized the societal contrast between the Greeks, who kept the upmost respect for the Gods, and the will of the Gods, and the Cyclopes' society that lack any acknowledgment of the Gods. The lawlessness of the Cyclopes' home is unwieldy compared to the strict rule laid out for the citizens of Greece to follow. Opposed to the confines of Greece, the Cyclops Polyphemus is a lawless shepherd that does as he pleases without fear of reprehension from the Gods or his lack of official government. The anarchism of the society is what allows the Cyclops the freedom to eat ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Idea of Antithesis in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet... The Idea of Antithesis in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet In this essay I am going to look at how antitheses are a big part and how they are central to Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. There are many antitheses and oxymorons in the play and I will be examining how they are used and how they drive the play on, entertaining and involving the audience. There are so many examples of opposites in the play, covering language, characters, scenes and backgrounds, focusing in the main on the central theme throughout the play of love and hate. The first and main opposite we encounter in the play is love and hate, in act 1 scene 1 although a trace of all the opposites are always present throughout the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once they marry they believe they are at the peak of the wheel of fortune, until fate closes in and makes havoc upon the couple, in the form of Tybalt's anger. 'Therefore do nimble–pointed doves draw love, and therefore hath the wind–swift cupid wings.' This shows us that the roll of fate between Romeo and Juliet is expected to turn love into death. Romeo does not want to follow fate and tries to escape it. "Then I defy you stars". He is displaying his free will and going against fate but in the play nearly always fate wins over freewill, for example the last scenes where Romeo and Juliet eventually die. Fate has overpowered their freewill no matter how strong they might be. Another opposite which features throughout the play is youth and wisdom. For example in act 2 scene 5 between Juliet and the nurse "I would hadst my bones and thy news, nay come I pray thee speak" Juliet displays her youth and her naivety. She is almost begging for the nurse to speak. This sort of language you would expect from a young girl who is impatient and "in love". It gives out an image in which you can see two people bickering away at each other. Shakespeare may have used the youth of the character to make a stereotypical young person which enlightens the play up, giving a kind of humorous outcome to the scene because of the differences between a wise and mature woman ... • 4. Antithesis The thesis can be defined as a single idea that brought about antithesis (conflicting idea) due to the idea's incompleteness, which then resulted in synthesis. The synthesis reconciles the truth in thesis and antithesis to form a new thesis, which can generate into another antithesis and the process, can continue until the truth is finally arrived at. In other words, a synthesis is a written discussion that deduces on one or more sources. There is no doubt that the attack on September 11, 2001, was a shock to everyone all over the world and with the way the chilling even erupt, no one would be able to predict where the next attack would take place. However, Tagliabue established that the reason behind his decision was to safeguard the entire players and their fans. These two articles are similar because they both discussed around the postponed or called off weekend sporting games, although there were contentions between the decision made by the two N.F.L. commissioners, Rozelle and Tagliabue 38 years apart. • 5. Analysis Of Into The Wild By John Krakauer In the book, Into The Wild, a journalist who was known as John Krakauer tells the story of Christopher Johnson McCandless, rather known as Alex. Krakauer's use of stylistic devices throughout his book is quite phenomenal. Just a few examples of the stylistic techniques that he uses to uncover his tone are: polysyndeton, anaphora, and antithesis. Krakauer remains indifferent towards Chris for a good 6 chapters, states all the facts, and tells the story as it is. He uses no emotion appealing words to hint to us how he feels about Chris. His indifference is shown through his use of polysyndeton, which is the use of several conjunctions when not necessary. One example of polysyndeton used in Into The Wild is, "Because [McCandless] ... This shows that despite all the struggles Chris went through in his lifetime he dies peaceful and happy, when he out of all people, had all the reasons to hate life and have a miserable death. The repetitive usage of the word "because" lists all the reasons Chris had die upset and un– happy. Another example of anaphora in Into The Wild is "The marijuana of course only made the tent seem even more cramped, more suffocating, more impossible to bear" (Krakauer 146). Krakauer uses anaphora to add symbolism to Chris's memory. "Marijuana" represents nature and how it makes you feel while the "tent" represents society and how it brings you down. • 6. Phenomenology Of Friedrich Hegel Gorge Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel was born in the year 27th August, 1770, in Stuttgart, Germany. He studied philosophies and classics at Tubingen. He was a tutor and an editor and explored theology after his graduation. "The Phanomenologie des Geistes" (The Phenomenology of Sprit) was his first work being published in 1807. He was the person who propounded the 'Dialectical method'. Which is usually in a three stages namely thesis (giving rise to its reaction), antithesis (negates the thesis) and the tension between thesis and the antithesis being resolved by the means of antithesis (Sparknotes, 2005). Master–slave dialectic is a process of negotiation and mutual interdependence. Hegel believes that the consciousness for–the–Master is not an independent but a dependent on slave. According to Hegel, both master and slave recognize their own existence only in relation of the other. Among the many implications of the master–slave dialectic, then, is the idea of there being mutual dependence between master and slave rather than a blanket opposition of dominance to subordination. The slave ironically shares in the master's power because the master defines himself only in opposition to the slave; that is, the master needs the slave in order to legitimate his comparative ... • 7. Antithesis In A Tale Of Two Cities Throughout the novel, A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens uses powerful contrast to present a story that reflects the situations in his life, as well as the life of two cities. Best/worst, wisdom/foolishness, belief/incredulity, light/darkness, spring/winter, hope/despair, everything/nothing; these antithesis springing up from the first paragraph provide contrasting ideas that highlight the extreme conflict revealed throughout the novel. Looking at the character motifs, Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton, in addition to Lucie Manette and Madame Defarge are contrasting characters evolving with the progressing story. Contradicting scenes between London and Paris set the background for a light versus dark motif. Dickens' use of contrast through antithesis, character motifs and two different cities demonstrate the intense conflict, change, and struggle that existed during the French Revolution. Starting with a chant of poetic anaphoras intertwined with antithesis, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way" (I.I.III), Dickens throws the reader immediately into thought–conflict. • 8. Antithesis In Ronald Reagan's Inaugural Speech Every four years, American citizens have the opportunity to elect a president and vice–president to lead their country. Although we have developed an impressive system that allows the people to choose their president, a problem occurs when the citizens of the United States are divided on who they desire as president. As 40th president of the United States, Ronald Reagan gave a successful inauguration speech to the people by using rhetorical devices to address the ways he will fix the problems of the country. Reagan commences by addressing the opposing side and explains why we should put aside our differences and unite together to become one country. With his triumphant use of antithesis, President Reagan grabs the audience's attention, makes them think about ideas in multiple viewpoints, and proves to them why he will a successful leader of the United States. While addressing his intentions on what to do with the government, Reagan proclaims, "there will be no misunderstanding, it's not my intention to do away with government. It is rather to make it work –– work with us, not over us; to stand by our side, not ride on our back". During this section of his speech, Ronald Reagan uses antithesis to contrast the ideas of the government over powering the people versus having a very minuscule amount of government action. Because Ronald Reagan successfully used antithesis to show that he did not wish to get rid of the government or overpower it, it created a stronger statement that allows the citizens to take into consideration both opposing ideas. The newly sworn in president, then uses anthesis again to clearly state that we gave the federal government its power by stating, " all of us need to be reminded that the Federal Government did not create the states; the states created the Federal Government". This uses antithesis to proclaim to the citizens that the Federal Government will not overpower the people because the people will be the ones giving the government its power. • 9. The Antithesis Of Peace : What Is Peace? What is peace? Although there are many word definitions of peace Merriam–Webster's dictionary defines peace as "freedom from disquieting or oppressive thoughts or emotions." Often times the best way to begin exploring what something is, is to begin be stating what it is not. Therefore, I shall briefly expound upon peace by examples of what isn't peace. Many times in life we find our mental state of being to be tumultuous. Everyone has a myriad of experiences and dispositions that make life hectic. Life is very unpredictable and the circumstances in which one is placed in in life are all the more out of any man's control. For example, a college student could state this his life is full of studying for classes late at night and waking up early in the morning to attend lectures, a salesman could say that his life is full of rushing to financial meetings and stress from worrying about meeting a sales quota, even a child could find himself lacking peace in his life because he may be perturbed by not being permitted to do something his parent deems unfit at the moment. All of these are examples of the antithesis of peace. However, the question still remains: What exactly is peace? Many philosophers have tried to answer this question throughout history and even scientist have hypothesized what peace is by analyzing the brain activity of an individual who are "at peace." In this essay, I shall define what peace is by the definitions set by a few notable philosophers, scientists, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. How Does Tim O Brien Use Antithesis In The Things They... In the fictional novel The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien vividly explains the fear and trauma the soldiers encountered during the Vietnam War. Many of these soldiers are very young and inexperienced. They begin to witness their acquaintances' tragic demise, and kill other innocent lives on their own. Many people have a background knowledge on the basis of what soldiers face each day, but they don't have a clear understanding of what goes through these individual's minds when they're at war. O'Brien gives descriptive details on the soldiers' true character by appealing to emotions, using antithesis and imagery. With this in mind, O'Brien describes many equipment the soldiers carry to the Vietnam War, such as weapons, sentimental items, food and most significant; their "emotional baggage". The freedom birds brings a sense satisfaction to the soldiers. This reminds them that they would not be depressed forever and they would not have to deal with their emotional baggage anymore. Furthermore, O'Brien describes this jumbo jet as if it is a real bird. He explains its appearance as "a big sleek silver bird with feathers and talons high and screeching", to explain the beauty of this plane. • 11. Evil Is The Antithesis Of All Evil According to the Oxford Dictionary evil is the antithesis of all good; morally depraved, bad, wicked, vicious (Evil). This definition relies completely on another word: good. All throughout our history, we have come to label events, object and people as either good or evil/bad. We tend to believe that the world itself is driven by good forces and evil ones. Since this is a term we often take for granted, it should not be debatable, and all of us should have the same concept about it. Sadly enough that is not true. Societies and culture shape our understanding of evil. Some of the most controversial themes we find in today's news are abortion, the death penalty, and euthanasia. Perhaps most of us will start by saying that these practices are wrong, but under certain circumstances they are justifiable. For instance, a girl subject of rape may not be in the physical, psychological or economical position to raise a child; a cancer patient with a bad prognosis might feel that the suffering is too much for him, etc. ... For many years, the black and brown communities have been making claims of the prolific abuse endured at the hands of police officers, the very organization whose job it is to protect and serve. And for years, it has been accepted by the minority communities as a way of life for black and brown Americans. It made excellent materials for comedians, movies and fodder for minorities to unite over at the water cooler. But that all changed when George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman, and aspiring cop, shot and killed 17–year–old Trayvon Martin. • 13. The Rhetorical Analysis Of John F. Kennedy's Address Despite the memorability of the end of John F. Kennedy's term, the beginning of the presidency, specifically the inaugural speech, will remain recognized globally. The first impression, the first address, and the first acknowledgement of John F. Kennedy's presidency is encompassed in his inaugural speech. With the importance of the speech prominent, Kennedy and his advisors wished to inspire the nation and send a message of strength and hope to the world. Addressing the American citizens and the global population, the president expressed the importance of the survival of liberty and peace. In the first section of Kennedy's speech, the topic of nuclear war and the contrasting views with communism create an ominous yet hopeful tone. Understanding the preeminence of the inaugural speech, Kennedy knew to use rhetorical methods to effectively communicate his idea. Metaphors, archaic diction, biblical language, and antithesis examples are demonstrated throughout John F. Kennedy's speech to enhance rhetorical appeals and express the importance of liberty and peace for the future. With regard to communism and the global population, the president utilizes metaphors to buttress his effort to send a message of strength and aspiration to the country. There are two main reasons why people obey said authority. Either they trust their authority figure and agree with the commands they are given, or they fear the consequences of disobedience. Most French and British men fought for their country because of the former reason, they believed they were fighting for a just cause; however, in due time, soldiers' views changed, and they only stayed in light of the consequences of deserting. (Barker 228) Yealland's view is that any sympathy or understanding shown towards these patients that don't believe they can be cured will only validate their position of helplessness and make them feel like their self–pity is justified. Just before this he also says, "The patient has to know when he enters the electrical room that there's no way out except by a full recovery." Parallelism In Letter From Birmingham Jail Many persuasive authors, such as Martin Luther King Jr. and John F Kennedy, utilize a variety of rhetorical devices to clarify and balance ideas, and to appeal to human emotions. One of the devices they applied to their literary works was parallelism, which is the repetition of word, phrases, clauses, or sentences that have the same grammatical structure or the same meaning. The second device, antithesis, is a form of parallelism that emphasizes strong contrasts. These devices are both used in "Inaugural Address" by John F. • 25. Brutus And Mark Antony Speech Analysis In William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, both Brutus and Mark Antony provide moving funeral speeches in hopes to sway the crowd towards their opinion. Brutus makes an attempt to assure the Roman people of his own innocence and justify the murder of Julius Caesar. Adversely, Mark Antony offers a speech to counter that of Brutus and act as the defense for Julius Caesar. While both speeches are sufficient in swaying their audience, Antony is able to use both pathos and antithesis more effectively and his use of the devices enables him to provide a far more compelling speech. Brutus attempts to use pathos to stir the crowd and develop empathy. In his speech, Brutus declares, "As Caesar loved me, I weep for him". Brutus' use of this strategy was less effective than Antony's because he focuses too much on his own emotions than trying to manipulate his fellow Romans' emotions. His lack of focus on the others' emotions prevented him from using this device effectively. Though Brutus makes an attempt to gain his audience's sympathy, he fails to do so. Mark Antony's speech also provided use of the rhetorical device pathos in order to sway the citizens of Rome to his side. His most prominent use of this rhetorical device is when he sobs, "Bear with me; My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, And I must pause till it come back to me". In saying this, Mark Antony allows for the Romans to empathize with him and gives a pause for them to think for a moment and feel pain with him. By trying to provoke emotion in the citizens of Rome, he creates a better use of the rhetorical device than his fellow Roman. Antony's use of pathos was innumerably better than Brutus'. Antony connects to the citizens of Rome and allows for them to empathize with him. However, though Brutus provides emotions in his speech, he does not provide the same connection and his attempt to appeal to his audience's emotions falls short. Antony demonstrates how strongly he feels by weeping over the body of Caesar. Brutus, however, reveals his emotions by plainly stating that he feels remorse, thus preventing the Romans from empathizing with him. In addition to pathos, Brutus' speech offers a weak example of antithesis. He uses antithesis to invoke ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Analysis Of Anaphora In Macbeth Anaphora Definition: An anaphora utilizes the purposeful repetition of the first part of a sentence or phrase. Anaphora can be traced back to Biblical times for its usage. It became a more common rhetorical device during the Elizabethan era. (LiteraryDevices) Function: An anaphora functions to create emphasis. By repeating the first part of a sentence, that specific idea stands out in the reader's mind. Anaphora can be used to draw attention to an word or idea. It also can compel readers to visualize said word by evoking emotions or certain ideas that may be implied through the device. Published Sample: Anaphora is used several times in Macbeth. In one instance, a nobleman named Macduff attempts to persuade Malcolm, the rightful ruler of their kingdom, to return to Scotland and overthrow the present tyrant. Macduff describes how "each new morn, new widows howl, new orphans cry, new sorrows strike heaven on the face" (Shakespeare 4.4.3) to show the persisting chaos evoked by Macbeth. Published Sample Analysis: In this scene of Macbeth, Macduff is describing the horrors Scotland is enduring under Macbeth's wrath. By repeatedly emphasizing on the 'new' aspect of these prolonged disasters, the reader, along with Malcolm, gains sympathy for the people suffering. The repetition of this word highlights how tragic the situation seemed to be and how there was no sign of it stopping. The anaphora is also used to imply the person responsible for Scotland's perish. The constant reference to increased death and chaos provides the implication that Macbeth is directly responsible. This, in turn, redirects to how excessive ambition affects a person. In this case, Macbeth allowed his ambition to overpower his life, which resulted in the death of his wife and the destruction of an entire kingdom. The author is able to emphasize this effect through an anaphora that describes the continuous suffering Scotland faced. Citations: Shakespeare, William. Macbeth. Bloomsbury, 2013. "Anaphora." The citizens have no rights to express themselves in the way that characters do in the movie; through building whatever pops into their heads, and the main plot of the movie shows how they returned those rights to the citizens of the Lego world. When looking closely at the beginning of the movie, everyone seemed to be happy living their everyday lives and going to work. There wasn't a single sad person. Assuredly everyone has heard of the saying ignorance is bliss. Well, the saying is true because the people in the city do not comprehend that they are being taken advantage of, and its simply because they are incapable of thinking complicated thoughts for themselves. The instructions tell everyone how to do everything so people stop thinking and eventually grow unable to think for themselves. • 34. What Is Andrew Allentuck Pulling The Plug On Capital... In the essay Pulling the plug on capital punishment, Andrew Allentuck uses an antithesis and an appeal to authority to prove his thesis. He believes that Canada should not restore capital punishment because it does not deter murderers, satisfy victims' families, and protect policemen. The essayist uses an antithesis that he can refute for his thesis. He says, "Policemen claim their work is intrinsically dangerous and their safety requires the death of people who murder police officers." Allentuck refutes this antithesis by giving a statistic that Canada had the largest number of police murders, 11 in 1962, when capital punishment was still in effect. He used imagery to create a picture in the readers and audience minds. He said " I see clouds of dust raised on the highways of the South; I see the bleeding footsteps." Douglass is describing slavery using imagery. With that imagery, Douglass painted a picture of slaves as they were making their way to be sold to their next master. Using imagery, Douglass creates a horrible picture in the readers or audience minds. The imagery he used replaced words with a picture and that picture makes the speech more memorable. Instead of just hearing words, the readers and audience, now, have a picture in their minds to think about because of the imagery. Frederick Douglass did not only use imagery to make the speech more memorable, he also uses it to portray how the slaves are being treated like property instead of being treated as the human beings they are. In the speech he stated, "...I hear the doleful wait of fettered humanity on the way to slave–markets, where the victims are sold like horses, sheep and swine, knocked off by the highest bidder." In this quote Douglass is using imagery to illustrate how the slaves are being handled like animals, by being sold to the highest bidder. • 36. What Are The Rhetorical Devices Used By Elie Wiesel... The last rhetorical device that Elie Wiesel uses to make his essay compelling is antithesis. Antithesis is when two contrasting ideas are purposely juxtaposed to create balance and to accentuate the contrast. The first example of Elie Wiesel using antithesis is when he states, "Would this terrible act drive us apart, I asked myself, or draw us together as a nation?(Wiesel 2)" In this passage Elie states a question if the terrorist attacks will bring American citizens together or apart. • 37. Antithesis In Hamlet Hamlet's façade of madness enables his cunning use of words and acting skills that led to the revealing of Claudius's guilt. But when the opportunity arises to exact his revenge, Hamlet's mask of madness is off and his true–self hesitates to finish what he desired. Shakespeare's use of antithesis, the change from verse to prose, dramatic irony, and sudden contrasting tone changes highlight Hamlet's inner conflict of being real or mad, inhibiting his ability to commit to either revenge or to his past, leading to his downfall. Thus, Shakespeare demonstrates how the desire for revenge can ruin any mentally stable person as it will make them mentally insane. While Claudius and Polonius hide, Hamlet attempts to keep his appearance of madness with Ophelia, but his true feelings for her pour out. Through Hamlet's creation of an antithesis and a paradox between "beauty" and "honesty" in verse, he continues to confuse and demonstrate his madness to Ophelia as shown by her replies in the form of interrogative sentences (quote act 3 scene 1 105–117). His inability to be clear with Ophelia demonstrates how detrimental his mother's marriage with Claudius was in breaking his trusting with others. But when Ophelia continually submits to his hurtful insults from his facade, Hamlet's true self is unable to continue and commands her to "[g]et ... thee to a nunnery" (quote later). ... • 38. Brutus Use Of Rhetorical Devices In Julius Caesar In the play, Julius Caesar, William Shakespeare uses rhetorical devices antithesis, rhetorical question, and anaphora, in Brutus' speech to Plebeians to convince them that killing Caesar was the right choice. Brutus uses antithesis to justify the conspirators' actions towards Caesar to the Plebeians. Using antithesis, Brutus convinces the Plebeians that keeping the Roman Empire is more important. Brutus declares, "Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more" (3.2.23). This example of antithesis helps to justify their actions by conveying the idea that Brutus cares more about Rome. Antithesis is used with the parallel structure of the juxtaposing words "less" and "more". By telling the Plebeians he loved Caesar, he is cleverly showing them he was one of them and has the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This example of antithesis impacts the Plebeians by conveying the idea that the Roman Republic is more important. Brutus uses rhetorical question to persuade the Plebeians that killing Caesar is for the better. Using rhetorical question, Brutus convinces the Plebeians that killing Caesar is in their favor. Brutus questions the Plebeians, "Had you rather Caesar were living and die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead, to live all free men?" (3.2.24). The rhetorical question forces the Plebeians to reconsider that Caesar is not the person they think he is. It makes the Plebeians ponder if Caesar was alive, then we would not be free and the Roman Republic will no longer be. By not saying the answer, Brutus cleverly inserts thoughts into their heads. Brutus knows the Plebeians would not want to be slaves, because the Roman Republic is about being free. This is affective to the Plebeians because it forces the Plebeians to contemplate the question on their own. Brutus uses anaphora to persuade the Plebeians that the Roman Republic is more ... • 39. Is Aaron Copland Considered The Antithesis Of... Inspiration may be a form of super–consciousness, or perhaps of subconsciousness—I wouldn't know. But I am sure it is the antithesis of self–consciousness. Only one man could claim the title as probably the greatest composer in American history for writing so many unforgettable works: Aaron Copland. He lived a life inspired by many things as well as inspiring people all across the nation, and it really led to the opposite of being drawn into himself, as he described in the quote above. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 14 in 1900. He was the youngest of five children to Sarah and Harris Copland. A musical spark came out in Copland already at the age of 11 as he began piano lessons with his sister. His musical talents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His first major work upon returning to America was "Symphony for Organ and Orchestra" which he wrote just for the few performances of Nadia Boulanger; the first one in Carnegie Hall in 1925 and another in Boston. As the twenties roared on, Copland began to show how his musical career would truly follow the ever–changing style of America. During the 1920's, Aaron Copland went with the trend and experimented with jazz styles in his music, which proved to be extraordinary in the views of many. His choice for other pieces came through modern music about which he once said, "I just happened upon it in the natural course of my musical exploration." This was apparent in the way he would use ideals of Neoclassicism in his "Piano Variations." Copland then hit a downfall in about 1936. He wrote a few works which were harder to perform and not taken in by many audiences due to the use of much more advanced techniques which were uncommon for the time. Copland knew a change had to be made because he quickly saw how many composers were working themselves into a vacuum, so he would follow a new path of the more simplistic American way for much of his life. This "simple to understand" type of writing is what brought audiences back and made Aaron Copland great. He started writing functional music like "The Second Hurricane" and "The Outdoor Adventure" for kids, as well as Of Mice and Men, Or Town, North Star, and The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
