2. Citizens’ engagement in the EITI Process
The EITI (Extractive Industries Transparency
Initiative) is an international standard for
transparency and openness around the
management of revenues from natural resources.
Governments disclose how much they receive from
extractive companies operating in their country
and these companies disclose how much they pay.
3.
4. EITI is based on principles which state that the wealth from a
country’s natural resources should benefit all its citizens and that
this will require high standards of transparency and accountability.
5. The government is also required to commit to work with civil
society and companies, and establish a multi-stakeholder group
(MSG) to oversee the implementation of the EITI.
6. When the country is granted compliant status, the Government is
committed to implement transparency and anti-corruption reform.
7. Citizens should
be informed, how
much is the rent
percentage from
the natural
resources
revenues
distributed to
their own Local
Government.
Citizens can use the
government’s
commitment to EITI
as a mechanism to
broaden national or
local debates and
awareness on
extractive industry
transparency.
8. To benefit the communities, public consultations, budget
monitoring, community monitoring, participatory planning etc.
should be initiated between local power and the citizens.
9. The public understanding of government revenues
and expenditure will help to initiate a public
debate in offering realistic options for a
sustainable development.
