Influence of effective interventions
on hand hygiene compliance in
healthcare workers
2. Major Points
Nosocomial Infections
Reasons for Low compliance
Research Design
Plan for Implementation
3. Nosocomial infections
“Nosocomial infections are a major challenge to the
heath-care system and are associated with significant
mortality, morbidity, and economic burden”
(Salama, et al. 2012).
Nosocomial infections are also known as hospital
acquired infections, and their development is solely
from a hospital environment.
4. Reasons for Low Compliance among healthcare
workers
Poor education among health care workers
Cutaneous infection
Understaffing or large workload
No patient involvement
Lack of disinfection dispensers
5. Research Design
When: January 2013 to January 2014
Where: The Coronary Care Unit in Fairfax Hospital
and Fair Oaks Hospital
6. Implementation at the Hospitals
Fairfax Hospital
Intervention includes all
strategies for poor hand
hygiene compliance
education on proper hand
hygiene compliance,
awareness of cutaneous
infection,
adequate amount of
healthcare workers
patient participation
sufficient amounts of
disinfection dispensers in
proper locations.
Fair Oaks Hospital
Intervention includes one
strategies for poor hand
hygiene compliance
Education on proper hand
hygiene compliance
7. How will these reasons be implemented though
the intervention?
education on proper hand hygiene compliance and
awareness of cutaneous infection-through monthly
educational sessions
adequate amount of healthcare workers- hiring
enough staff
patient participation- bringing awareness of hand
hygiene compliance to patients for participation
sufficient amounts of disinfection dispensers in
proper locations-providing them in exact locations
8. Further implementation
Creating more interventions in the United States to
lower nosocomial infections and raise hand hygiene
compliance rates.
