PREPARATION: Organizations must ensure that an emergency
plan is prepared for the workplace, including workers who may
work in different or multiple work place.
What is an EP? Is a written set for instructions that outlines
what workers must do.
EP plan must provide at least:
 EMERGENCY procedures
 Action plans
 Evacuation procedures
 Notify workers and emergency service organizations
 Medical treatment/assistance
 Effective communication between organization-
authorities.
 Testing and alerts of the procedures
 Information about changes
 Training information
Types:
 FIRE
 EXPLOSION
 MEDICAL
 RESCUE
 VIOLENCE
 BOMB THREATS
 EARTHQUAKE
 NATURAL
 MAN MADE
 EP is better to be based on practical assessment.
Hazards/risks associated with work activities.
Consideration:
 Nature of the work
 Nature of hazards/risks at the workplace
 Size and Location of the workplace
 Proximity to Health organizations
 Number of the workers, visitors (persons with needs)
 History about equipment, related/past cases.
Practical information:
 Contact details for key persons/workers with specific
roles/responsibilities under the EP.
 Nearest emergency services.
 Alert /Mechanism for alerting workers.
 Instructions/procedures/actions.
 Workplace map/new possible area/map to go.
 Transport
 Post incident procedures (medical treatment/help/new
location, remove).
Access to the EP:
Accessible on a notice board in each department.
Workers must know what to do, their roles.
Training: Adequately trained in procedures.
Explosions, fire, evacuations, earthquake, manmade
Or natural disasters.
Training may include:
Evacuations to safe place and count.
Identifying assembly points.
Location of the equipment/fire points.
Shut down procedures.
Transportations.
Training:
Refresher training for existing workers/train for new workers
Specific training for new tools/equipment/visitors;/contractors.
Specific training for key persons.
Reviewing: EP mustbe implemented in an emergency. To be
effective anEP must be reviewedand revisedona regular basis.

Fire equipment:
 Appropriate fire equipment.
 Properly maintained/regular checked/tested
 Stored in a clear/covered area
 Adequate number of trained workers/staff in use.
 Do they know what type to use for different types of fire?
Evacuations:
 Evacuations plans for emergencies, procedures.
 Address types/risks which may arise at the workplace.
 Cover everyone, allow quick/safe evacuation (for
workers/visitors/persons with special needs).
 Alarms/siren, clear stairs/route/passage ways.
 Exit signs (All above must regularly tested).
Weather conditions:
Is there a risk of extreme weather?
Bushfire, floods, storms. Control measures?
Weather warning: From 1-5.(1=normal/5=red code).
SAFE PLACE, SAFE EXIT ROUTES.
Communication equipment, workers trained in
evacuations or related procedures.
