curative approach.

accepted mantra for living a good life in today’s
times.
• Health care products contribute to 9% of

• Total cereal market in India is around Rs
600 crore | Oats market is
small at Rs 120 crore.
• The bulk of the breakfast cereal market
is made of cornflakes, a Rs 400-crore
segment, growing at a healthy 20 per
cent yearly.
• There are more than 50 regional players in the
segment apart from major players like
Kellogg’s, PepsiCo’s Quaker Oats, Bagrry’s,
etc.
• Competition can also be expected from other
FMCG chains
• e.g. Ready-to-Eat players like Britannia with
its range of ready-to-cook upmas, porridge,
and pohas under the Healthy Start brand.
• Oats—a grain that is still considered
horse feed in some parts of the world
including pockets in India—has already
emerged a popular breakfast cereal on

• Tamil Nadu accounts for 40 per cent of

Off-gassing of corn flakes and need for
oxygen barrier.

Indian local market where high humidity
is an issue through a metallized film
laminate with a oxygen barrier.

Ltd (ROCL) is a 3-way collaboration between
the Rajasthan State Agriculture Board, Plastro
Plasson of Pune and Indolive Ltd, all of which
have equal shares.

cultivation in the country and other states have
taken nearly 10 lakh olive plants from it
• The current production of Olives, which have
immense benefits for health, in Rajasthan is

• According to World Health Organization (WHO)
and Food Agricultural Organization (FAO)
Probiotics are defined as, "Live micro-organisms
which when administered in adequate amounts
confer a health benefit on the host".
• Yakult is a delicious probiotic drink that helps
improve digestion and helps build Immunity.
• Yakult contains 6.5 billion beneficial bacteria
(Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota)
• Single plastic bottles of Yakult are sorted into
groups of five and shrink-wrapped in
polypropylene film. Ten "5-packs" are grouped
together and wrapped again in polyethylene film
and then heat shrunk, forming a 'carton' of 50
Yakult bottles.
• 6.5 billion bacteria are ensured throughout the 40
days shelf-life under proper refrigeration conditions
CONCLUSION
• The citizens of India are becoming proactive instead of reactive regarding
their food products, which is changing the consumption pattern in the
country.
• The health food market in India is tremendously increasing.
• The health food market should also include ready-to-eat traditional Indian
products like poha & upma as also fermented products like idli, dhokla,
dosa, etc.
• People in the rural parts of India should be made aware about newly
emerging health products like Yakult.
• Packaging of health foods involves myriad variety of materials from the
most ancient glass to metallized laminates.
• Newer trends in packaging should be encouraged by the future Food
Scientists.
