The United Nations and UNESCO has even declared sport a fundamental right. And in 2005 the United Natioals actualy created an office called the United Nations Sport for Development and Peace programme. Their aim is to use sport to promote peace and humanitarian efforts.
In the last decade we have seen an uprise in the use of sport to promote health and humanitarian efforts in developing and third world countries. Because It’s the simplicity, efficiency and homogeneous nature of sport that makes it an ‘only makes sense’ method for countries to promote and activate social reform.
The project I’ve founded and am now president of is Love Guinea Basketball – the mission of love guinea basketball is to develop peace through sport in Guinea
My experiences playing basketball in Guinea showed me exactly how sport can create sheer joy and unity between children, communities, families, youth, local business and commercial groups. I was touched and honoured to play basketball within their womens national league, and became overwhelmed at how sport was able to bring together young people from different communities and different ethnicities in peaceful ways. It was clear that sport brang together the people of guinea.
Guinea has been plagued by years of violence as a result of an unstable political landscape. It is a country of ten million (10 000 000) people composed of more than thirty different ethnic groups
Despite the country gaining independence in 1958 from France, the people of Guinea are still challenged by a developing democracy, corruption and an unstable government, and violence is frequently fuelled by inter-ethnic groups mainly of young people
According to government figures, the youth represents more than sixty percent (60%) of the population, and they are the principal actors and victims of the violence
So I wanted to show you all some photos taken in Guinea whilst I was there. The pictures show the violence that the Guinean Youth are engaged in. The most recent outbreak was in June of this year.
So at Love Guinea Basketball we believe that with the influence of youth in Guinea, they must be engaged to play a role in building peace and unity. All of the youth love sport, but conditions to practice are very poor with infrastructure almost non-existent and the sport administration also at a very poor level.
So to give you a visual account of what sport can actually creates for young people in Guinea, I now want to share you these photos..
We are a non political board of 9 members supported by a qualified technical committee, all of whom are driven toward providing the youth of Guinea opportunities through sport. We are comprised of Guinean non-government organization called Union for Integrated & Sustainable Development, the Guinean Basketball Federation, and a remarkable team from across the globe. And just recently I was acknowledged by Government of Guinea’s Ministry of Youth, Youth Employment & Sport and granted an official mandate for the programme "Love Guinea Basketball".
Basketball is the second most popular sport in Guinea next to football, so the program focuses on increasing the uptake of basketball through promotion in schools and Guinean communities, to also include more women.
With Guinea’s rich resource sector, and overall potential as a West African nation to support developments in Agriculture, Tourism and Trade, the board strongly believe sport can provide a stabilizing effect on Guinea’s Youth.
From a low socio-economic standpoint this can correlate directly toward combatting crime, increasing skills for employment, combatting poverty and creating peace and social justice.
Without peace and unity in Guinea there’s no opportunity for economic prosperity. I’ve seen it first hand. And without economic prosperity, this still leaves the country as one of the poorest in Africa. The country cannot and will not prospour until it addresses its issue of social violence
