  3. 3. Goal of Program <ul><li>The goal of the program is to take people with raw talent and intellect, nurture them in our environment through a thorough immersion in research and coursework, and produce well-educated researchers and future leaders in Computer Science. </li></ul>

Relevant Information <ul><li>The CS PhD is heavily integrated with SCS research activities. </li></ul><ul><li>At any time there are about 140 students enrolled. </li></ul><ul><li>Records show that it takes about 6 years to complete the program and that over 70% of entering students receive a PhD </li></ul><ul><li>Students can enter with just a Bachelor's degree. </li></ul><ul><li>Students do not need to have an undergraduate degree in computer science, but most have one either in computer science or in a closely related technical field, such as electrical or computer engineering. </li></ul>

To complete the PhD, CMU requires that each student <ul><li>Participate in directed research </li></ul><ul><li>Pass 96 university units worth of graduate courses , with certain distribution requirements </li></ul><ul><li>Serve as a teaching assistant at least twice </li></ul><ul><li>Demonstrate oral and written communication skills </li></ul><ul><li>Write and orally defend a thesis , a significant piece of original research in a specialized area of Computer Science </li></ul>

Plan of Work <ul><li>Toward the end of September of the 1st year, each student is matched with a suitable advisor (if research interests change, he or she is free to change advisors at any time). </li></ul><ul><li>During the first 2 years, the student begins to gain the foundation of knowledge that will allow him or her to go on and become an expert researcher in CS, primarily through the following ways: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>By mastering a body of graduate material, achieved by passing 8 full-time courses (96 university units). </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>By learning how to organize and begin to carry out original research, achieved by participating in directed research. </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Twice the student serves as a teaching assistant. While teaching or taking courses, we expect students to spend at least half their time doing directed research. </li></ul>
