2. 2. CS at CMU

www.cs.cmu.edu/education/graduate/doctoral/

In particular: http:// www.csd.cs.cmu.edu/education/phd /

 3. 3. Goal of Program

The goal of the program is to take people with raw talent and intellect, nurture them in our environment through a thorough immersion in research and coursework, and produce well-educated researchers and future leaders in Computer Science.

 4. 4. Relevant Information

The CS PhD is heavily integrated with SCS research activities.

At any time there are about 140 students enrolled.

Records show that it takes about 6 years to complete the program and that over 70% of entering students receive a PhD

Students can enter with just a Bachelor's degree.

Students do not need to have an undergraduate degree in computer science, but most have one either in computer science or in a closely related technical field, such as electrical or computer engineering.

 5. 5. Areas of Research

Algorithms and Complexity

AI: Planning, Knowledge Representation, and Game Theory

Computational Molecular Biology

Computational Neuroscience

Computer Architecture

Databases

Formal Methods

Graphics

Human-Computer Interaction

Large-Scale Distributed Systems

Machine Learning

Mobile and Pervasive Computing

Networking

Principles of Programming

Robotics

Security

Scientific Computing

Software Engineering

Technology and Society

Vision, Speech, and Natural Languages

 6. 6. Doctoral Programs in the School of Computer Science

Computer Science

Computer Science/Neural Basis of Cognition

Robotics

Robotics/Neural Basis of Cognition

Language and Information Technologies

Human-Computer Interaction

Software Engineering

Computational and Statistical Learning

Computational and Statistical Learning/Neural Basis of Cognition

Computation, Organizations and Society

Computer Science (Pure and Applied Logic)

Computer Science (Algorithms, Combinatorics, and Optimization)

Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program (self-defined)

 7. 7. Contacts at SCS

Sharon Burks: questions about procedure and policy

Frank Pfenning: questions about the program's content and structure.

Martha Clarke: questions about How to Apply to the CS and SCS doctoral programs.

Students and their advisors; advisors and their students.

Doctoral Review Committee (DRC).

Student Ombudsperson.

 8. 8. To complete the PhD, CMU requires that each student

Participate in directed research

Pass 96 university units worth of graduate courses , with certain distribution requirements

Serve as a teaching assistant at least twice

Demonstrate oral and written communication skills

Write and orally defend a thesis , a significant piece of original research in a specialized area of Computer Science

 9. 9. Plan of Work

Toward the end of September of the 1st year, each student is matched with a suitable advisor (if research interests change, he or she is free to change advisors at any time).

During the first 2 years, the student begins to gain the foundation of knowledge that will allow him or her to go on and become an expert researcher in CS, primarily through the following ways:

By mastering a body of graduate material, achieved by passing 8 full-time courses (96 university units).

By learning how to organize and begin to carry out original research, achieved by participating in directed research.

Twice the student serves as a teaching assistant. While teaching or taking courses, we expect students to spend at least half their time doing directed research.

 10. 10. CS at Portugal

Paulo Veríssimo - FCUL

José Cardoso e Cunha ou Luís Caires - FCTUNL

João Gabriel Silva ou Henrique Madeira - FCTUC

Ricardo Machado – Univ. Minho, Univ. Aveiro, Univ. Porto
