Advances in forensics not available several years ago has alleged Lazaro Ruben
Torres of murdering Mark Costello eight years ago at historic masonry church St
Agnes, now in ruins in yet another example of crumbling grandeur on the Detroit
skyline.
Torres and his young daughter were randomly shot in 2005, his daughter killed
and Torres barley clinging onto life. Retired as of this year, police Lieutenant
Frank Carroll believes Torres always hunted for the killer before moving back to
Mexico, “Torres was arrested on several different incidences in a span of five
years, trespassing, breaking and entering. He always thought he was onto
something.“
Perplexingly, Torres was stabbed in 2009 alongside Aaron Costello, Mark
Costello“s younger brother, inside El Nacimento Taqueria off of Vernor Highway.
Costello was pronounced dead at the scene together with Aldonza Delgado and Jose
Gutierrez who was shot in the head. Torres had claimed Delgado and Gutierrez
walked inside the restaurant to settle a debt with him and was attacked beside
bystander Aaron Costello. Lieutenant Carroll believes Torres“ story had a
missing part, “Only he (Torres) knows what happened. Aldonza Delgado was a
neighborhood psychic and I believe he was working with her or paid her money to
track down the killer or killers. He had the Costello brothers picked out for
some reason. Something went wrong and was going to go wrong inside that
restaurant.“ Torres was never charged and asserted the fatal shooting was self-
defense.
The story becomes even more unusually bizarre when Torres tried to commit
suicide on three different occasions. After completing seven months in
rehabilitation at the Detroit Medical Center in 2010, Torres began working for
the Archdiocese of Detroit as an Exorcist. Although the Archdiocese has never
affirmed that Torres worked for them Fr. John Maksym described the association,
“Lazaro was a troubled young man who had enormous tragedy. What was his weakness
became his ultimate strength. He had spiritual gifts that he offered.“
Some Detroit neighborhoods started to fable Lazaro Ruben Torres as “the man who
died five times,“ noting all of Torres“ close encounters with death. Torres
began to accumulate a neighborhood clientele seeking his services for psychic
consultation. Torres left Detroit in 2013 for unknown reasons relocating to
Mexico where he is reported to be working with the Mexican Archdiocese. In 2015
forensics connected the DNA of Torres on the clothes of Mark Costello strangled
to death inside a pew at St Agnes Cathedral eight years ago. Three years after
his brother Aaron Costello met a similar fate coincidently beside Torres.
The U.S. called for the extradition of Torres in January although his location
in Mexico is unspecified. Lieutenant Carroll believes the Mexican Archdiocese
knows, “I believe they know where he“s at. If he somehow got psychic abilities,
resurrected five more times or predicted the World Series it makes no difference
to me. I deal with reality and the reality is the evidence. He should be brought
to justice.“
