2. Outcomes
Research
Examines end results of health services on individuals
Intended to provide scientific evidence relating to decisions made
by all who participate in health care
Considers patient values and preferences
Outcomes based measurements are used to establish evidence-
based practice (Schmidt & Brown, 2015).
3. Patient-
Centered
Outcomes
Research
(PCOR)
PCOR compares the impact of two or more preventative,
diagnostic, treatment, or health care delivery approaches on
health outcomes, including those that are meaningful to
patients("PCOR at AHQR," n.d.).
AHQR accepts nominations of patient-centered outcomes
research (PCOR) with the potential to advance patient health
outcomes for future implementation ("PCOR at AHQR," n.d.).
All nominations are available to the public.
Anyone can submit nominations.
4. PCOR
Trust Fund
It takes 17 years for evidence to be adopted into practice according
to the IOM ("PCOR at AHQR," n.d.)..
AHQR is seeking to fill the gap by investing in disseminating PCOR
findings from Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute and
other government funded entities ("PCOR at AHQR," n.d.).
5. Dissemination
of PCOR
AHQR ensures results are understood through a three step
process:
Synthesis of research to establish evidence
Translation and communication of evidence through development
of tools, training, and outreach
Support of health systems and providers in implementing evidence
into practice ("PCOR at AHQR," n.d.).
6. Infrastructure
Development
Funds are allocated to support the development of PCOR in
facilities that need focused support and are emerging centers of
excellence located in geographic areas that lack capacity and
predominately serve minority populations ("PCOR at AHQR,"
n.d.).
7. Evidence
Synthesis
Evaluates all relevant studies on a particular clinical topic to clarify
what is known versus gaps in evidence.
Evidence synthesis builds on previous research and produces
useful information within 1-2 years instead of 3-5 years ("Evidence
Synthesis," 2016).
PCORI’s first systematic reviews will include:
A-fib
PTSD
Rheumatoid arthritis
Urinary incontinence
8. Study
Spotlight
Diabetes research
RCT in diabetes prevention found metformin reduced progression of
prediabetes to diabetes
Higher-risk participants received greatest benefit with use of
metformin.
Lowest risk did not benefit ("Evidence Synthesis," 2016).
9. Study
Spotlight
Lupus treatment options
Lupus can lead to kidney failure if not treated early with strong
medications
Immunosuppressive drugs are better than corticosteroids in treating
kidney inflammation for patient with lupus ("Evidence Synthesis,"
2016).
