Alzheimer's progression timeline
Alzheimer’s disease (AD), a degenerative disorder that attacks the brain and leads to dementia, is one of the most common dementing disorders of old age,
affecting nearly 4 million individuals
in the U.S. alone. If a cure is not found and current demographic trends continue, it is estimated that the number of persons affected by AD will double every 20
years. Dementia is a group of symptoms characterized by an insidious decline in intellectual functioning of sufficient severity to interfere with normal daily
activities and social relationships. The most serious aspect of the loss in intellectual functioning is in the domain of cognitive ability. The dementia of AD is
distinguished from that seen in such conditions as age-associated memory impairment and benign senescent forgetfulness in that it is inevitably marked by
progressive, irreversible declines in memory, performance of routine tasks, time and space orientation, language and communication skills, abstract thinking,
and the abilities to learn, carry out mathematical calculations, and construct an object with blocks. In addition, AD is distinguished by personality
changes and impairment of judgment. The rate of alzheimer's progression timeline varies, but invariably the disease eventually renders patients unable to care
for themselves. The time from the onset of symptoms to the end of the life can vary from 2 to 20 years. The increasing visibility of AD, evidenced by the amount
of attention it receives in both the scientific community and the lay community, may create the impression that it is now being m ore widely or perhaps
inappropriately diagnosed. There is, however, no evidence to indicate that the incidence of the disease — that is, the rate of occurrence of new cases — has
increased over the years. (Incidence is distinguished from prevalence — the percentage of a population that is affected with a particular disease at a given
time.) In fact, ancient Greek and Roman writers as well as Elizabethan chroniclers accurately described the symptoms of AD, thus suggesting that it or very
similar dementing disorders have long been part of the human condition
