Editor's Notes
Hi I’m Luke – I’m going to talk a bit about how my job in digital helps to save lives
12 – I wanted to make robots – now I work at RNLI in the social media team
A big part of my job is to make sure people see safety messages that could save their lives
If they don’t know who we are, or what we do –
why would they listen to us or tell their friends and family?
So we need to show people, what we do as close as they can get to the action
Try and create things that people might share – everyone loves an animal rescue
Part of our job as a team is to find the best content of rescues from around the coast,
edit the footage to be short enough that people willl watch and share it to
– this helps people understand who we are
Sometimes we get great pictures – like this little chap who we helped back to sea
95% of the people that work for the RNLI are volunteers
We support them to do their job, provide training and graphics they can use to talk about the RNLI
One of our challenges is that some stations don’t have anyone who can run their social media account
So if you wanted to get some experience, towards making social media part of a career,
ask at local groups/clubs if they need any help
Sometimes the things we do, are less serious - one of my colleagues wrote a poem and it got shared thousands of times
I’ve spent 3 days wearing a replica of old lifeboat crew kit – to show how our lifejackets and jackets have improved through time
It comes back to one big challenge
½ the people that die at the coast every year had not intended to go into the sea
Most of those that were planning to go in the sea like sailors, kayakers, fishermen they know who we are, so we can talk to them about safety around the water and try and prevent those accidents from happening, some are easier than others
So we have to try and find people in other ways – we started using newer apps like instagram
Share good content from other people
Isaac Nash story
Couple of years ago, we started trialling snapchat
This summer we took it all around the UK and our lifeguards ran snapchat
We worked with the lifeguard teams and their managers to make it happen
Provide support and ideas – mostly we had to persuade their bosses
Worked really well for us, looking at expanding it to do more days in the lives of our volunteers
I also work to help people that suport us – the lifeboatcrew is run by a member fo the public, when we saw it we got in touch and made sure they’ve had any safety info and been involved when they can – encouraging people who can tell our story
Started off with a small beach builder guide last year
Worked really well, smashed all targets for people that got involved
This year made a survival mode game to teach safety lessons while playing minecraft
Worked really well for us – aprt from Pokemon go got really popular
Who knows who this is?
300,000 doing pranks and dares –
we had to fish him out of the thames – fast flowing, cold water shock made it difficult for him to breath
Water is reallynot good to drink – this is just after he was sick – oops – work with people we might not want to
He started getting attacked on social media –
So we got in touch and gave him some safety advice to share when he was on tv + radio
Donated profits from that video to us
Or that we might not think we need to – 70% of people who drown are young men – so we worked with people that had an audience of young men (and women)
We made an interactive video – choose your own adventure where you are with your mates – pick which route you walk home
What you d when your mate falls in
Different endings with a safety message
This kid wanted to maek robots – 5 years later had first emial addr
4 years later in 1998 google was launched
In 2004 Facebook was launched, by 2008 I started working in social
2011 snapchat and minecraft first released
One of my highlights was talking about Bitcoin project – digital currency, RNLi was 1st main charity to accepot it – I led project
In 3 years time, there’ll be jobs in digital that don’t even exist now
When you join the workforce, being able to learn and use these new things will make you valuable to companies
At RNLI I’m working with some colleagues to set-up reverse mentoring – getting new younger employees to teach digital skills to those that don’t know them
Point of all of this is that I couldn’t have planned or known fully what I wanted to do, as it hadn’t been invented yet
Come and see us, have a go on VR headset – meet Megan on panel and started at RNLI as an apprentice in marketing,Nikki who’s now an online editor and a blogger
