Introduction
The use of stem cells can advance drug development, knowledge of disease, patience specific disease
treatment, and can bypass the limits of mouse–models for research. According to the National
Institute of Health (1), stem cells are unique in the following ways: they can divide and renew
themselves for long periods, they are unspecialized, and they can give rise to specialized cell types.
The uniqueness of these stem cells allows for the testing of new drugs, cell–based therapies and the

The generation of stem cells from zygotes and blastomeres retain the ability to create all embryonic
and extraembryonic tissues (13) these are deemed 'totipotent', while cells that generate embryonic
and cannot generate extraembryonic tissues are deemed 'pluripotent'. Induced cells that are in a
differentiable state, pluripotent, are the cells chosen to advance medicine. Cells selected for
induced pluripotency cannot be terminally differentiated, as these cells lose their ability to be
developed into other cells types (14). Pluripotency can be induced by the study of embryonic stem
cells. These cells express factors (Oct3/4, Sox2, Klf4, c–Myc), deemed Yamanaka factors (15) and
described as such in this review. There are currently four main methods for delivering these factors
including viral vectors, DNA–based induction, RNA molecules and recombinant proteins (fig 1.)

Stem cell research is the future of medical and biological research and remedies, and it is
fascinating to watch the progression of this new and important science as it unfolds. These cells
were discovered in mouse embryos in the 1980s, and are remarkable because of their potential to
grow into a variety of different kinds of cells within a body. Common in fetuses, and more rare in
adult animals of all kinds, stem cells can be manipulated in useful ways to repair many tissues,

While it is true that all people began as blastocysts and embryos, and that we agree a formed
person has moral standing, this led to a gray area in ethical reasoning. At what point do we
consider a person to be a person? Did the parents of the embryos knowingly contribute their

I understand that conservatives believe life begins at conception; thus, stem cell research is murder.
However, there are several thousands of embryos each year discarded from left over in–vitro
fertilization banks and aborted fetuses that could be used for stem cell research. These embryos
are already destined for destruction, so why not use them for a better purpose? They can be used
to save many lives. I do not agree with abortion; however, since abortion is legal in the United
States, some good should come out of this terrible act. If the embryos are merely discarded, no
good has come from their terrible end of life. Yet if the embryos destined for destruction are used
for stem cell research, they could provide some other people with the blessing of a healthy life.

What exactly are stem cells? How can the use of these cells benefit us and how exactly
are they acquired? Believe it or not stem cells have been in play when it comes to medicine since
the 1950's in France (Steenblock 1). This topic is very controversial and I surmise that it is
strongly due to the lack of knowledge when it comes to stem cells and their importance. I,
myself, am very intrigued by stem cells and my goal is to define what they are and layout facts
pertaining to them.
This paper will be divided up into three main sections: what are stem cells and the
different kinds; why stem cells are important and how they are medically beneficial; how stem
cells are acquired and used for treatment. The last section will be followed up by the conclusion.
There is a lot of information pertaining to this, therefore each section will begin very broad and
finish very concise, much like a funnel.
So, what are stem cells? According to Kirkpatrick, stem cells are an essential part of the
broader field of regenerative medicine and are pertinent in preventing and treating diseases that
are, as of right now, incurable (Kirkpatrick 1). Now let's look at the definition given to them. In

research causes many social dilemmas and raises the long–debated question of when life conception
