Pets complete the family. We often think about how much we make our pets’ lives better by
taking care of them. But the truth is, they help us in ways we sometimes don’t
acknowledge. Kids are normally better with pets than most parents are. By having furry
friends at home, we get to teach children about responsibility.

Some kids have lived with pets around the house as long as they can remember. For them,
they've grown up knowing how to feed, take care of, and sometimes even clean up after
it. As they grow older, it should be explained to them that these duties become their
responsibilities already as they are more capable of doing it better than before. Ask them
which tasks they find easy to do—the tasks that they can do consistently. By nature, kids
think more about how they feel than how others feel. Living with pets will help them
become more empathic since they now have a sense of taking care of others.

Older kids should understand that having a pet means they would have to take care of it
regardless of their mood to do so. Before getting the pet they want, it’s best to let them read
and learn about the kind of pet they’ll be having. This will walk them through the process of
being a responsible owner. Be sure that your child understands what it means to be
responsible for another’s life and the importance of taking great care of it. Pets are not toys.
