Studies show that if someone engages in some physical exercise, they are less likely to have depression. However, what is not clear is whether the amount of exercise differs across people with and without depression. We are interested to determine whether people who are depressed significantly differ from non-depressed people in their weelly exercise participation. We ask 20 people with clinical depression and 20 people without clinical depression to report the minutes they exercised in a one-week period. What is the independent variable? Minutes of exercise in a week Minutes of exereise in a day Depression score Depression status (clinically depressed vs. not clinically depressec) Number of times exerelsing in a week Number of times exercising in a day What are the null and alternative hypotheses (two-tailed test)?
