Editor's Notes
The Earth is surrounded by gases that trap heat from the sun warming the surface so it can sustain life. Since the industrial revolution the concentrations of these `greenhouse gases' has increased, trapping too much heat, and causing the Earth to warm up.This effect is known as 'global warming' or the `greenhouse effect'.
Climate change impacts include:Flooding and extreme rainfall eventsHeatwaves and extreme temperatureDrought and water shortagesCrop failures – food security, food pricesSea level rise – storm surges - impacts on coastsReduced frost and snow, glacial retreatDisease, pests, health and wellbeingDamage to buildings and landDisruption to services - transport , energy, IT/communicationsEcosystems disrupted, threat to habitats and species
