Environment and climate literacy
1. ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE LITERACY
By: April Alice Angelie C. Balmocena
The earth’s climate has changed overtime and it is felt throughout the world. Our
country, the Philippines, is not spared from it. According to a study by the World Bank,
the Philippines is among the top 12 countries that are at the highest risk of experiencing
the hazards of climate and vulnerable to tropical cyclones.
This is the reason why environmental and climate literacy is given importance.
Humans have to change the way they think. If we want to have a lush, green and
sustainable lifestyle and environment, we first have to ‘green our minds’. This means that
people must think in preserving, conserving and protecting our environment not only for
the present but for the future generations as well.
Thus, education is the key to progress. When people are empowered with
knowledge, people can then think of ways that they can defend their environment and
promote sustainable solutions to their existing environmental problems/issues and
climate change that would benefit their communities both present and future.
Furthermore, environmental awareness has a great role in inculcating green
thinking in people’s minds. It is not an easy task, that is why we need our policy makers
to include environmental policies that would change the behavior of citizens towards an
environmental-friendly behavior.
Protecting the environment is everybody’s job and responsibility. Environmental
problems and climate change along its negative impacts are real and it affects us all.
