Chapter 5 Backup and recovery
Training Guide: Configuring Advanced Windows Server 2012 R2 Services
3.
4. You can use Windows Server Backup to do
the following:
■■ You can use Windows Server Backup to restore files and folders as well as applications.
■■ You can use Windows Server Backup to restore the System State data. After the System
State data is restored, you’ll need to restart the computer.
■■ You can use Windows Server Backup to restore any volume except the one that hosts
the operating system. If you want to restore the volume that hosts the operating
system, you need to boot into the Windows Recovery Environment.
■■ You can use the Windows Recovery Environment to perform a full server restore, also
known as a bare metal recovery. When you do this, all existing data and volumes on
the server are overwritten with the backed up data.
5. نکات:
Windows Server Backup writes backups to .vhdx files, the
same type that are used with Hyper-V as well as when
creating disks for iSCSI (Internet Small Computer System Interface)targets and disks
in storage pools.
Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 enable
you to mount the contents of a virtual hard disk (VHD), which
allows you to examine those contents without having to
perform a full restoration using Windows Server Backup.

The true test of any backup is whether you’re able to perform a successful recovery.
7. After this lesson, you will be able to:
Restore from backups
Recover servers using Windows Recovery Environment
Recover servers using Safe Mode
Configure the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) store
8. Windows Server Backup writes backups to
.vhdx files,

well as when creating disks for Iscsi targets and
disks in storage pools.

16. Windows Server 2012 R2 System State Non-Authoritative Restore
1.1. By ProHut IT Services
2.2. 1. To restore System State, start Server in Directory Services Restore
Mode ( DSRM). 2. To start Server in DSRM mode, run msconfig, select Boot
tab, check Safe boot option. Select Active Directory repair, click Apply, and
then click on OK. 3. It will restart server in DSRM mode.
3.3. 1. Open Windows Server Backup, click Recover to initiate System State
Recovery. 2. System State non-authoritative restore is primarily for one
Domain Controller.
4.4. On the Getting Started page, select This Server. Click Next.
5.5. On the Select Backup Date, select the date and time of Backup which
you are intending to restore. Click Next.
6.6. On the Select Recovery Type, select System state. Click Next.
7.7. On the Select Location for System State Recovery , select Original
location. Click next.
8.8. On the Confirmation screen, select Automatically reboot the server to
complete the recovery process. Click Recover.
9.9. On the Recovery Progress, click on Restart to restart the Server. It will
complete the recovery process.

Each domain controller tracks updates by using update sequence numbers (USNs). Each time a domain controller
updates, either by processing an update performed locally or by processing an update acquired through replication, it
increments the USN and associates the new value with the update. USNs are unique to each domain controller as each
domain controller processes a different number of updates to every other domain controller. When this happens, the
domain controller that wrote the most recent change, known as the last writer, wins. Because each domain
controller’s clock might not be precisely synchronized with every other domain controller’s clock, last write isn’t
simply determined by a comparison of timestamps. Similarly because USNs are unique to each domain
controller, a direct comparison of USNs is not made. Instead the conflict resolution algorithm looks at the
attribute version number. This is a number that indicates how many times the attribute has changed and is
calculated using USNs. When the same attribute has been changed on different domain controllers, the
attribute with the higher attribute version number wins. If the attribute version number is the same, the attribute
modification timestamps are compared, with the most recent change being deemed authoritative.
If you add or move an object to a container that was deleted on another domain controller at the same time, the
object is moved to the LostAndFound container. You can view this container when you enable the Advanced
Features option in the Active Directory Users and Computers console
