In this phase of the project, the team implemented their solution by beginning and completing the construction phase of the Lifecycle Wheel Board Educational tool. The tool was constructed out of bamboo, plywood, and reused records and uses wheels to reveal the lifecycle of different items from creation to reuse or disposal. While the construction phase began late due to struggles choosing an idea, the team was able to use donated and reused materials and is satisfied with their progress in visualizing the abstract concept of waste streams.

In this phase in our project we are implementing our solution by initiating and completing
the construction phase. After gathering all necessary research and materials we were able to put our
ideas into action. We focused on using materials that were being reused and donated to stay focused
on the ideals of the SCRAP Humboldt organization
The Lifecycle Wheel Board Educational tool was constructed out of bamboo frame with a
plywood backing along with stand made of bamboo which holds the education board in an upright
position just below eye level to remain practical for interactivity with hands. On the board itself
wheels were constructed using a used record and Plexiglas. The knobs used for spinning the wheels
were made from knob samples made out of different kinds of wood. Each wheel has the ability to
spin independently of the other depending on the lifecycle item chosen by the user. Each item is
either represented by a picture or the actual item is displayed on the board. As the user spins each
wheel, the lifecycle of that particular item is revealed to the user. The user can track the cycle of the
item from the point of creation to its form when it’s finally reused, recycled or discarded.
Since it took a quite a while to determine which one of our solutions we would like to
implement, we began the construction phase quite late. We still have a number of additions we have
to make to the project in order to finalize everything but at this point we are very satisfied with the
progress we made after taking into consideration our initial struggles in choosing our idea. For this
particular project, the Waste Stream Education Kit, it was especially crucial to pick the right idea
since we were dealing with a problem that was so abstract. It was expected that most of our energy
would be going into developing the solution before the actual construction phase. The construction
phase itself was relatively easy in comparison and once we found the right materials to use, it became
pretty straightforward.
