It is difficult to visualize fluid flow through compact heat exchangers experimentally. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) allows engineers to understand how fluids interact with heat exchanger surfaces and design plate patterns that can properly distribute fluid through channels, improving heat exchange. CFD helps design heat exchangers when direct experiments are challenging.
