A Research, Preview, and Review Web Quest
By: Amy Jo Hofbauer
 Passive transport requires no ATP
 Diffusion – a substance moves from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration
 Small uncharged molecules such as carbon dioxide and oxygen
 Osmosis – water moves from a hypotonic solution to a hypertonic solution
 Facilitated diffusion – a substance moves from an area of higher concentration to a lower
concentration with the help of carrier proteins.
 Charged particles such as potassium, and larger molecules such as glucose
 Active transport requires ATP
 Cell membrane pump – sodium and potassium ions are moved across their concentration
gradients.
 3 sodium move out as 2 potassium ions move in
 For animal cells that must maintain a difference in charge across a plasma membrane
 ATP adds a phosphate to “prime” the pump
 Exocytosis – newly synthesized proteins and other molecules to be exported are carried in
vesicles from the ER and Golgi apparatus to the plasma membranes. The membrane of the
vesicle then fuses with the plasma membrane, expelling its contents to the exterior of the
cell.
 Endocytosis – substances are taken up by a small in-folding of the plasma membrane and
are incorporated into a vesicle.
 Pinocytosis – the uptake of liquids while phagocytosis is the uptake of solid substances.
 The Topics – plant, or animal cells – choose 3 cells from either kingdom
 The Table should include the following columns
 The name of cell type.
 Name of elements and molecules transported.
 The transport mechanisms used for each element.
 The Discussion
 Write a paragraph about each type of cell. Include 5 – 8 sentences for each paragraph.
 Red Cross
 How RBCs work
 Gut Cells - Read only the section “Intestinal Epithelium is Highly Polarized”
 Absorption and secretion of nutrients in the gut - Please only focus on the nutrient
names, and methods of cell transport. There are a lot of details which you do not
need to know.
 Nerve Cells – Please only read Section E. “The Nerve Impulse”
 Melanocytes and sunburn
 Movement of water and sugar in plants
 Phloem Sieve Tubes - Notice how several mechanisms are still theoretical.
 Several mechanisms serve to feed plant cells
 Function of Parenchymal Cells
 It is a way to compare uniqueness and adaptations of cells
 It will help you understand the function of different types of cells and tissues.
